Rainbow Hostel is a lovingly restored traditional-style house with a small kitchen, a nice dining room and a cosy common room with a turf stove. It is a good place to stay to explore the region as Mattie gives a slide show and free guided walks.
Price Dorm bed €13-14 Prices are in local currency and are inclusive of all taxes.
Pros:
Excellent host
Cons:
No supermarket/drugstore nor brekfast available in 2003.

June 8th, 2003A small, cozy, clean, family run hostel offering basic amenities in the upper village. The hard working host, Mattie Shannon, makes time to give a free tour of the Burren. Mattie's land, its history and his knowledge of it are all very impressive. He can show you where boulders were pushed across the land during ice age. Take a walk with Mattie while he checks on his cattle. They're grazing next to the ruins of 5000 year old circle forts and tombs. Gardeners would appreciate Mattie's knowledge of the strange combination of plant life unique to the Burren. What locals refer to as the better pubs, McDermott's and McGann's, are both within 100 yards of the Rainbow. On a rainy day, Mattie might give a free slide show while the peat burning stove keeps you warm. Phone, Bike rentals, washer and dryer for a small fee. A free ride to the cliffs. Big kitchen, warm quilts, dorms and doubles. Mattie runs the Rainbow B&B also. Bus stop is right in front. I did not see internet offered but I did not ask for it. Travelers checks and Visa are accepted but I believe eurodollars might be preferred.

I only stayed here one night as i was passing through with a tour group. i found this hostel to be clean with basic facilities such as a kitchen. There really is not much more to the hostel than that. It is well located, quite cheap and the staff are friendly.

The Doolin Rainbow Hostel is located a little further from the village centre than others, but very well known even to the bus drivers who stop at its door on request. When entering this small cottage hostel, you are immediately struck with a feeling of "home"; it's a living room entrance, and everyone in the Rainbow acts as family. The rooms are small but tidy, there are only a few showers but the sanitation is clean and proper. A large kitchen provides with all you need to cook and eat, and the owner can do your laundry at request. The whole hostel send out a nice, warm, frindly vibe and it should get five stars for that alone, but I give it three stars due to some small things you will find easier in big corporate hostels, i.e. bike rental, telephone and internet access... But as said, a five-star winner when it comes to friendly management and Irish atmosphere !
