BUG Review
This excellent hostel is a purpose-built place with a sunny atrium; a brilliant kitchen and a TV lounge. Accommodation is in nice rooms with en suite bathrooms and top quality mattresses. It is right in the heart of the town centre, making it the best located of Kinsale's hostels.

This place was absolutely filthy. I had an australian friend with me and I was MORTIFIED! By the term filthy I am attempting to describe the dirt in every single corner of the room, the unswept dirty floor, the vile smell of the room, the dirt of the windows, the blinds, even the walls were unclean and the furniture looked like it had never been wiped down, never mind polished or cleaned. The room we stayed in had not been cleaned in a very long time. The build up of grease and residue inthe corners was incredible - I moved the locker to plug in a phone charger and I was afraid of what might be behind there when I saw the black dirtybuild up in the corners. Everything was absolutely filthy. There was hairall over the bathroom floor and sink - it hadnt even been swept out, never mind cleaned or disinfected and it really could have done with an industrial clean. I was unable to sleep that night - I didnt feel comfortable sleeping in the sheets considering the dirt in the rest of the bedroom and bathroom. I stayed fully dressed and slept on the bed rather than in it. I would not recommend anyone stay in Guardwell Lodge never mind bring a child there!

I have never been to a dirtier place and that's including Amsterdam. There were hairs all over the floor (not just in the bathroom) and I had to clean the toilet as soon as I got there. Also it says on the website that towels are provided (what it doesn't say is that is only if you are in a twin room, e.i. not dorm). The reception is not open 24 hours a day but from 7am till 9pm. I just wish I had taken pictures to show people how bad it was. I had to buy ear plugs because of the amount of noise (we were at the front of the hostel where you get all the noise from the street plus the boiler was very noisy) and was alround disappointed with the place. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy.

I found the hostel to be of very poor quality. The place was very dirty. In my room there was two inches of dust everywhere and the bathroom was filthy. This is not good enough and i was paying 55 euro for the room per night!!! I certainly would not recommend this hostel to stay in. Those updates which recmommend the Hostel are from 2003 and they should be removed as we went by those recommendations.

The rooms were dirty, September 8, 2005

Room and bathroom were both dirty. There were hairs on the bed clothes and pillows. The boiler for the water tank was very noisy and there was no enough hot water for all four people in the room to take a quick shower in the morning. For E17/ night it should be reasonable to expect basic cleanliness and a hot shower if nothing else.

I found the hostel on the net and read the 2003 reviews and thought it looked and sounded lovely for my hen weekend. I don't expect much from a hostel, but I do expect it to be basically clean and this hostel was far from that. Some of us were more lucky than others and I was one of them, the twin room I stayed in had hairs on the bathroom floor and the toilet seat needed an extra wipe before anyone went near it! There was dust everywhere and the blinds were broken. We were afraid to walk around in our bare feet. The only good thing was that the shower was hot in my room (some of my friends didn't have this luxury in the other rooms).

I was disappointed with the state of the hostel and told management that the pictures on the internet were shall we say - a bit out of date! The place was run down and dirty, and that to me is unacceptable. If you are looking for a clean place to rest your head in Kinsale, I would advise you to look elsewhere.

This is one of the best hostels I've ever stayed in. Very clean and modernised and situated right on Main Street. Staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are very hotel-like. the kitchen and TV lounge are very clean well equipped and cosy. Great place to stay when in Kinsale

Stayed here in May 03 with a tour group. We had a very clean, bright 4-bed room, with the most comfortable hostel beds I've ever slept in, and with nightstands and closet space for hanging clothes. Felt more like a hotel than a hostel. Toilet, sink and *bathtub* were right in the room, and was quite bright and spacious, unlike most hostel bathrooms. Kitchen facilities were provided for cooking. This was one of my favourite hostels to stay in, and right in the heart of the adorable town. Would recommend to anyone.
