Schull Backpackers Lodge is the perfect hostel in the perfect location. Run by a really nice and friendly woman, when i called to say we were running a little late her first concern was if we were ok and that she was looking forward to seeing us. There is no curfew so you can come and go once you are given the code for the door. The double room we had was to that standard of a B&B - clean comfortable and the showers were hot! The location was perfect, a short walk from the pretty town of schull. The owner also was really helpful giving us information on what to do in schull and the surrounding areas of mizen and so on. I cannot recommend this top class hostel highly enough!

this was the cleanest, nicest, and best valued hostel i have ever been to. it was more like a comfy cabin than a backpackers lodge. the beds were actually beds instead of 2 inches of foam. nice kitchen area, lounge, and dining area. the town is right down the street and everything is perfect. i will definitely come back here.

the the building is wooden and noisy, which did screw my sleep. I'd stay again if it was in the quiet season or I could get put in the caravan. It's on the arranged do Ireland in five days tour bus circuit (Don't ask me, I don't understand this notion either). Excellent cycling down the peninsula towards Mizen Head and around - you feel yourself running out of land and into time itself. Very good deli with good bread and local artisanal cheeses, etc. Didn't find any music but did show off my flamenco CDs to some Spanish women.

My mother and I were in Schull (on our way farther down in the Mizen Head Peninsula: Goleen and Crookhaven) in May of 2002. We stayed here for the buses further down to the southwest had stopped for the day. The Schull hostel has many things going for it. No lockout(a 4 digit code is given to you to open the door once you leave for the evening...which there are a couple of pubs in the one main street of town which you may want to visit), a kitchen, excellent showers, and friendly staff. Oh yes it is very affordable too. 11 Euros is what I believe it cost per a person when we were there. My mother and I had a room all to ourself as the place wasn't too busy at this time of year(maybe 10 people staying there for the night). People were friendly at the hostel, the Japanese Fisherman learning english in Ireland was fun to talk with. The hostel has lots of information on the area, such as hiking and trips to Cape Clear Island a stones throw away. The location is pretty close to the main road. Maybe a five minute stroll. The harbor is beautiful, and there is a friendly super market on the main road to grab some food to cook in the kitchen. I also ate at one of the INN's restatuants while in town(the one across from the library) on the way back through. It was a little on the pricy side, and not too great if I recall. So yeah, stick to the grocery market and make your own food in the hostel. If you find yourself in this area...it wouldn't hurt to see 3 Castle Head. Apparently the land used to belong to my Great Grandmother...I got to see it and walk around in it...very beautiful. You'll have to keep going southwest as it is past Goleen. Crookhaven was also a very very pretty place. Hope this helps on your stay in the Area and at the Schull Youth Hostel.
