I totally agree with efesto - what do people want from a hostel. This place is very cheap, clean, friendly, security conscious, and central. breakfast is bread/toast, marmalade, apple, orange/hot drink. I have to say however, i have stayed in better, and am not sure why it keeps being rated in the top 10 hostels worldwide given the fact that there was not an amazing atmosphere, but this may just be the time of year i visited - nearly christmas and thus not that busy. i would definitely recommend staying here, especially given the level of noise that surrounded barnacles at night!

I dont know what the last reviwers wants from an hostel, but certainly they have a strange idea of a good hostel.

Avalon house is cheap (12 euros for a night), in city heart near Trinity college or temple bar, large and very clean (showers, toilets and common area. If your room fellows are pigs, thieves or noisy is not hostel's foult!). It have a large fully equiped kitchen and many common areas (with billiards, tv's and videogames).

Breakfast is bread, butter, orange juice, marmellades, fresh fruit and hot drinks, like thè, coffee, cappuccino, chocolate, in large quantities.

Your security is guaranteed by an access-card system and a large safe luggage depot.

Staff is kind and every time avaible to give you usefull information.

What u want more?

The truth is Avalon house is not the right place for people that considerate an holiday only an occasion to intoxicate itself all the day.

If u are looking for a good place to get drunk, cross the road and go to the pub "The Swan", or better, just go to sleep with others stupid tourists drunkards that crowds Temple Bar.

The room was very small and very expensive. There was no place to put my backpack. The showers and toilets were not clean. I must have been on the party floor, because it was loud in the hallways every night. On the second day when I used the shower, someone stole my wallet out of my pants. When I complained, the counter girl was rude and suggested that I was stupid not to carry it into the shower with me. However, I did recovery it later that day, minus my money. There was a long wait to check in and out. The breakfast was a stale muffin and banana. The good part was that the hostel wasn't too far from the Temple Bar area.

My girlfriend and I stayed here last spring because the reviews said that it was a top hostel. Our stay was not good. The reviews must have been written by friends of the owner. It was too expensive for what you get. The rooms were very small and dirty. My girlfriend complained because the bathroom smelled bad. But she was told that there were no other rooms. It was loud in the hallways and difficult to sleep. The elevator was not working and we were on the top floor. The breakfast was not filling and the tables were dirty. We finally cut our stay here short and moved to another hostel. Bill Nortley, Toronto

Breakfast available, huge kitchen available, nice security, and a very helpful staff. This is a great place, especially if you are staying for a while. There are plenty of places to chill in the building besides your room-including tv areas, foosball, pool tables, etc.

A dublin suggestion, check out the rail tours that will take you outside the city. Dublin is amazing, but the countryside is beautiful and worth the trip.

I was very surprised by my stay in Avalon House. Staff were very friendly and extremely helpful.

Dorm was clean and tidy - bathroom facilities also clean and tidy and toilet paper always stocked up.

Little breakfast is a definite bonus.

Would recommend Avalon House to anyone.

This hostel is not at all what I expected. I rented a single assuming they'd put all the singles on the top floor away from the noisy dorm rooms. Wrong. Mine was two doors away from the dorms. The first two nights I was kept awake from 2-5am by a rugby team partying in their rooms!! I asked them to be quiet but they just laughed at me and were disrespectful. The front desk guy was very unconcerned and passive. As the only female on the floor I felt it was not safe for me, since they were drunk in mob behavior and since the only way for me to get help if needed was to get past them to reach the phone or stairs/elevator. I filed a complaint but they never apologized!

I stayed at the Avalon House for two nights. The first night we shared a quadroom. The room was tiny, hardly any room to put your backpack. There was a sink in the room, showers and toilets in the hallway. Most of the toilets were out of toiletpaper for 3 days! The showers are tiny and dirty. There are lockers on the groundfloor to put your bags. The kitchen is great! It`s huge! The location is awesome, there are really cool restaurants and bars within 5mins walking distance! Also the main shopping aerea (Kings Road I guess) is very near. The bus from and to the airport stops right infront of the hostel. Breakfast does look like a joke, but it`s not as bad as it looks! Everyone gets a plastic-bag with some juice, a muffin and a fruit. Theres coffee also. Two large common rooms and a place they call the café, but it`s really another common room with a coffee maschine.

I stayed at 3 different places in Dublin, the Avalon House is second best. (1. Barnacles, 3. Kinleys)

I am a male in my 40's on a budget when I travel. Have traveled to Ireland 5 x's since 2001 and my most recent stays at Avalon in Sept 2002 Jan2003 & June 2003.I rarely have time to plan my first few day's in Dublin as I leave with little notice(air courier)

I need a private room and usually the staff have accomodated me as well as the manager in making me happy. It is a bummer to arrive in Dublin w/o reservations and exhausted after 15-16 hours via air, nice to get on the city bus which stops within the block and although the private rooms were small I still felt happy to settle in . The breakfast of the muffins, bannanas and yougurt, juice and coffee were an enrgy boost and served with a bag to load up with. Lots of interesting people around with 24 hr access(with key card)Walking distance to good eating places as well as local pubs on every corner and several gay pubs & Clubs within the short walk towards the Liffey. The storage is excellent and very inexpensive. Avalon does satisfy and I will stay there in the future

I have just returned from a three night stay in Dublin. I was travelling alone , the staff could not have been more helpful. Great security, key cards and cctc, rooms are small but really clean. Avalon's location is second to none - all main attractions are within walking distance. I would strongly reccommend Avalon.
