We visited in winter, when it was really quiet. There's a cosy lounge, with fire, and a reasonably well equipped and cleanish kitchen. Beds were fine... in winter it was very cold. Downside was the bathrooms, which were incredibly basic. But a definate plus is the very unspoiled quiet Irish bar the hostel is attached to. Only basic food available in the village -- buy in Ballinasloe before you arrive.
