BUG Review
Archview is surprisingly disappointing compared to the high standard set by Galway's other hostels. It has limited kitchen facilities and a TV lounge with old ratty sofas and was dirty and in need of maintenance when we visited. However it is the cheapest place in town and is centrally located, making it a great value place to stay if you don't mind sleeping in squalor.

i live in dublin in ireland i heard about the assult case which almost made my stomach turn, i was later dellighted to hear that the assult alogation was dropped as it was found she was lying and quickly scurried back to america.

i later stayed in this hostel were the temptation to ask the gardai about the case got the better of me, i was told that the case was still pending as the owner refused to press charges becouse "he didnt beleave in that sort of thing regardless of the sercumstances". i thought this was nice of him after the damage that had been done to his rep. the hostel was in fairly poor condition but was being renovated in parts and looked really nice. a good change from a squalar. the chairs werent great but the people who stayed there were all sound. the people are so nice its common practice to leave your e-mail to keep in touch.

This place was the first hostel I had ever stayed at, so I thought that sleeping in the bunk bed filled room, and sharing a VERY dirty kitchen and washroom with 9 other guys and 3 or 4 girls was normal...Until making my way to Dublin and staying at "GOOD" hostels. Holy cow this place was nasty. Patrick (the cool cat mentioned in one of the other reviews) was the manager at the time I was there as well. As cool as he was, the place was nasty. I was lucky enough to meet a TONNE of really cool people, so we had a blast in the dirt. But it WAS still dirt. Had a great time, but this place was aweful.

As I was checking in, I talked to the girlfriend of the desk worker (barely a desk... a cabinet? a bookshelf?) who said she used to stay there as a student since it was the cheapest hostel in Galway. I said, "but it's okay, right?" She hesitated, laughed, and then said, "it's better than no place."

That should have been my warning.

My room had 10 beds, but I was the only person staying there. The pillows were worthless and I had to steal a passable blanket off a different bed. The shag carpeting smelled awful (imagine the bacteria!), and the entire building felt like a run-down tenement. When I finally drifted to sleep, I was jarred awake by two men barging into the room to look around. There was no knock, and they were not escorted by staff. I was terrified. Eventually, they returned to take two of the beds, but the experience was wholly unnerving. There is no staff supervision, and I would believe any stories of crime activity.

In the morning, I had to perform acrobatics to use the bathroom without contracting terrible diseases. The toilet was broken. The tiles were cracked, water covered the floor at all times, it smelled like sewage, and the shower had low water pressure and cold water only. I've seen outhouses that were cleaner. It is the worst bathroom I've ever seen, and I've seen many scuzzy bathrooms in fuel stations, etc.

One staff member tried to strike up a conversation with me (he was surprised to find me in my room - no kidding!), but no amount of customer service (and there isn't much) can make up for the abysmal facilities and minimal security. If you can't afford an extra few Euro to stay someplace reputable, then I would avoid Galway altogether before staying at Archview.

I stayed in Archview Hostel for well over a month in the summer of 2003. The manager at that time was a cool cat named Patrick. it was pretty dirty, but for 45 euros a week I couldn't complain. The people around there were cool as hell and almost everyone was long term so it was the same bunch the whole time. No one was assaulted while I was there, but with the people around at that time I'm not surprised, everyone was very close and respectful. the one time a girl from the hostel was assaulted at a local pub, a few of the guys took off and made sure it would never happen again.

It's really disheartening to me to hear all these horrible stories. I wish everyone could have had the same experience that I did.

I've stayed in many hostels around the world of varying standards and this is the worst, most disgusting, grotty, dirty, foul and smelly place I have ever stayed in. We were forced to stay in here due to last minute booking and found it after trying every other hostel in town which were all full. Before finding it, we contemplated sleeping in the car. This would have been significantly more pleasant. Under no cost should you stay here. There are reviews you can find saying that you can get to know good people etc etc but this does not even begin to make up for the appalling state of the place. From talking to people we were staying in a room with who had talked to the owner, they said that he himself said that he did not care about the standard as the nature of hostels is that they are for travellers who won't be back anyway. A great attitude, considering his business. I could go on to talk about the unhoovered floors, filty kitchen, toilets/bathrooms, beds and windows, the ancient, holey mattresses no doubt rife with insect infestations but I'll leave that to your imagination and hopefully not your experience.

I most certainly will not stay in a hostel whereby a man can sexually assault a woman and get away with it scot free.I definately would not reccommend any female I know to stay here.It seems like a place where theres a rape just waiting to happen-it definately wont be happening to anyone I know.Word of mouth regarding assault is going to ruin this hostel even more than the reviews about cleanliness it has recieved on other sites.Do not stay here.

Heard about the attempted rape at this hostel and the attitude of the manager Antoin, was absolutely disgraceful. When in Galway stay with a registered hostel.

1 star is a star too many for this place?

A girl from the States reported a sexual assault here and was virtually ignored, of course thats according to her but I believe her. No apology was given and she revieved no refund. Not that money is important after being felt up by some drunken guy.

i have stayed there before and found staff terribly unhelpful. It also came to my attention just today on one of our National Radio Stations "The Gerry Ryan Show" that a girl was sexually assaulted there. They did nothing not even a refund. No respect.
