1. the no-drinking rule was enforced on staff and american college kids(drinking from bottles of wine)instead of persecuting Irish, English and Australians who had to finish a can before coming in!

2.they had someone mentally alert at the desk - when I was there, 3 days, not an organised person in sight, they all looked asleep and acted it. 28 minutes to get a confirmed booking accepted and through.12 minutes to get a laundry token.

The place itself is comfortable, and except for boozing college kids, clean. If anywhere in Galway is convenient to facilities, this is - the city is a tangled mess because of building sites etc.The best part about Galway is the bus to the Aran ferry.

Okay, so I really like this hostel. Ive stayed there twice so far and have never had a bad experience. For the first time I was in a 3 person room and for the second am 8 person room. In both cases the rooms were large and the bathrooms clean. They had that push button shower, but what can you do about that? I love the sheets because theyre blue and not the standard, bleached white. I dont know why that makes a difference to me but it does. The kitchen is of good size and the breakfast pretty standard. The best part is definitely the free Internet. What more can you ask for as a backpacker?

We stayed here last October and had a great time. Our original stay of two days spread into five. We stayed in a six bed dorm which was of comparable size to others we stayed in in europe. Beds were comfy, rooms and modern ensuite was clean. Hostel had excellent facilities, the kitchen was great, the TV room was good, internet was free (spent two hours on it once before the line started). The guy who was on nights was fantastic - short guy with North American accent. When we reported someone for having sex in the next door bunk he immediately did something about it (got them a room). I don't get the complaints listed in this forum. OK, there's a no beer policy, but Galway is full of places to drink beer - why would you do it on a bunkbed with The Kings up the road. Only downer was parking the car - although the 2 euro carpark at the mega shopping complex helped - if a little insecure. We'd stay here again no problem.

this was my first hostel experience, and I was really impressed. the location was was great, no more than a few minutes walk to Eyre Square. I stayed in a 4 bedded female room, and found it to be clean and not as small as I'd presumed it would be. the ensuite bathroom was again clean and the shower was hot. kitchen area had enough space for everyone and there were no queues to use facilities (microwave, cookers, etc.) most guests washed up after themselves. sometimes the internet room was full, but can't complain seeing as it was free and I DID manage to get online, plus some computers were being fixed. full of info on tours, surrounding areas, nightlife, etc. good price too. I'd definately chose this one again.

We wanted to give a chance to this hostel and we don't regret it at all. the only deposit we were asked for is 1 euro for the key. the staff was friendly and helpful. the room was tidy, the shower hot (plus common showers outside the room). We had no problem to access on the internet. the kitchen was big enough to let all the people cook and eat at the same time. The breakfast (even if we were warned it was only coffee and toasts) was excellent: orange juice, tee or coffee, toasts, marmelade...

We could only regret that the corridors are noisy.

the hostel was almost empty. I don't know how it's like in summer when the hostel is full but in May it's really great. I would definitly recommend it. We stayed two nights and there were both restful.

I don't understand the bad reviews. Yes, the rooms are alittle cramped but we walked away with two new friends because we made the best of the situation. Yes, had trouble with our key cards but it didn't keep us out of room. We found the staff one of friendliest in Ireland and had no problem getting computer time. If you want a clean room, great location and a relaxing stay this is the place.

I would not recommend this hostel to anybody after the treatment we received there. Basically they kept a 300 deposit for no good reason and no damage was done to the property. We ended up calling the Gardai (Police) on two occasions but the only explanation given by the manager was that we had damaged the hostel's reputation!!! Admittedly, we made some noise but this was compounded when the hostel confiscated my brothers bag because he had two cans of beer inside it. The funny thing about this is that my brothers bag was closed and he wasn't drinking in the hostel so how did they find the beer without searching through his bag when we were out? So in order to get his bag back at the end of the night, my brother's friend called the police. Therefore, the next morning we were advised that we couldn't have our deposit back because we had damaged the hostel's reputation! We had to call the police again! The police agreed with us but there was nothing they could do to force the hostel to give our deposit back. This is why I am taking the time to write this - Hopefully, it will cost Sleepzone, Galway more than 300 in the long run and hopefully they will realise that when people do the right thing, they should not be penalised! I have stayed in hostels all over the world and a little noise is not a basis for losing a 300 deposit. The police wouldn't have been called if 1) management hadn't opened and searched the bag and 2) had given back the bag (with or without cans). The management at this hostel compounded a small problem (all they had to say is "throw the cans in the bin") and made it bigger in order to make themselves an extra 300 on top of our room rate! We ended up paying as much as we would have payed in a 4* hotel. Next time, I go to Galway - I won't be going near this place again or neither should you.

I booked this hostel based on the glowing review of "annoymous" who I now fully believe to be the owner or something because they certainly cant ever have been a guest at the place, its is truely over hyped, the place has no character or atmosphere, the staff would rather you just were'nt there, free net access- big deal stay somewhere else and go to a net cafe, you'd be better off!!!!

Hostel Manager's Right of Reply

Hi ! My name is Ronan Garvey and I'm the Manager of Sleepzone in Galway. We're totally open to criticism and in fact accept that some of the criticisms in the reviews below have some validity but in all honesty I don't think there's enough balance here and would just like to respond to some of the points. First, I just want to clarify that the anonymously written positive review is nothing to do with us ! I know it looks a little suspicious with the wording but I honestly have no idea who wrote that review ! As for the negative ones below we accept some of the criticisms - some of our rooms were a little cramped this summer - but the alternative was regularly turning people away late at night - Galway is jam-packed at peak times - and lots of people end up sleeping on floors elsewhere. At other times of the year this problem doesn't arise. We've given a lot of thought to maintaining a relaxed atmosphere, and feel we have the right balance. Galway is a booming town full of pubs, clubs and restaurants - we don't feel the need to replicate that inside the hostel. We have a no smoking and no drinking policy and maybe that lessens the potential for "fun" but we see ourselves as providing a safe, clean (maybe in summer that means taking a bit longer to get the rooms ready) and cheap place to stay - in the city centre close to where all the action is taking place. In a city hostel it's just not possible to have the same atmosphere as a rural one and still maintain the same standards of security and cleanliness. Most of our guests appreciate this approach. The free internet is only limited to 15 minutes when other guests are waiting to get on. Of course we will be taking on board peoples' recommendations and changing a few things during the quiet winter ahead. We're looking at investing in a new luggage room which will allow more space in the rooms, and some small changes in the kitchen area (which many say is the best hostel kitchen they've ever seen). I fully accept peoples' criticisms (and I'm wary of reviews which contain no negatives !) but I just want to point out that the ones on this site are genuinely not representative of the broad number of responses we have got. Our in-house comment cards are almost all very positive - of course there are occasional problems with key cards, space etc - and we have been reviewed over 260 times on hostelworld.com and hostels.com and received an average rating of over 80% - one of the highest. In fact in June, July and September this year we were ranked in the top ten in the world on these sites (out of over 4,000 hostels on them) - based on surveys of hostellers after their stay. Also, we didn't write the very positive reviews in Let's Go, Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, Guide du Routard and others ! Good guidebook reviews and positive word of mouth probably does create an expectation that is hard to match. It is still a hostel - not a luxury hotel - and problems can emerge but I think on the whole our staff are friendly and professional, we give good service and good value for money (including free internet and free Wifi). I hope people reading these reviews will check us out and judge for themselves !

Maybe my expectations of Sleepzone were too high. I had heard reviews that it was more like a hotel than a hostel. I stayed in a 6-bed en-suite for 2 nights. The room did not seem big enough to fit all three bunks, but somehow they managed to fit them in. That said, it was a very tight space with little room to move around. The room was clean though. A good and bad thing about Sleepzone is their use of key cards to get into the rooms. This is a great idea, but my key card never seemed to work. Maybe it's just bad luck, but they really need to improve this. There is an internet cafe next to reception where guests can use the computers for free when the the internet cafe is closed to the general public. They keep a limit of 15 minutes, but that's reasonable considering the number of guests. What kept Sleepzone from getting a higher rating was the staff. They kept telling me that the room would be ready in a hour or 30 minutes, but I ended up coming back to the hostel three times over a period of over 3 hours to get into my room. It was really annoying to be told one thing one minute and something completely different the next. Overall, my experience here was average. Sleepzone is a decent hostel, but it's not a good as some reviews (ie Let's Go) say it is.

Sleepzone is ok if you are desperate for a bed, but it is a really impersonal hostel with a cold and institutional feel. Although modern, the rooms are small and its not that clean. The staff is not really helpful or nice and the kitchen prep areas are a bit cramped. My advice, only come here if you have no other options.
