BUG Review
This big youth hostel, 5km outside Killarney, has extensive common areas that include a kitchen with a big dining room, a TV lounge with Internet access plus a quiet common room with books and games. The dorms are crammed with metal bunk beds but the four-bed dorms are more spacious. To get here take the Killorglin bus to the Golden Nugget Pub (Fossa Cross).

Loved the place. Went there after reading the BUG reviews. They are true. It's huge, clean, beautiful. I lay in bed in the mornings and watched the mist roll over the lakes, in front of the mountains! The dorm room itself wasn't anything special, and some beds were old and saggy but some were new and firm. It was only 10 euros/night last week (Sept 2003) and the staff was nice and friendly, you could rent a bike there, and the place was quiet and lovely. It's worth the walk (at least 30 min) or bus ride (4-6 per day) to town to stay out there. The whole place is non-smoking!

Inside looking: 5. Hotel accommodations for a hostel price. Wonderful.

Surroundings: 5. Forests, mountains, lakes (and lots of rabbits!) Incredible.

Dorms: 4.5. Some of them are great, very big and amazing views. Other ones very good, but not so spectacular.

Showers: 4. Good ones.

Kitchen: 4.5. Huge and very nice dining room. Good kitchen.

Common rooms: 5. Beautiful library. TV room very comfortable with fireplace. Piano room also ok. Like 5 stars hotel.

Staff: 5. Young and dynamic. You have the possibility of working 15-20 hours a week in exchange of free bed and breakfast. Maybe difficult to enter in summer, but no problem in low season. A good way to meet friends if you are travelling alone. The owner is a nice guy.

Contras: No shop nearby. 5 km to Killarney and, in winter, only 4 buses to go there (I think there is a free mini bus in summer to and from Killarney).

Facilities: 5. Laundry, drying, breakfast, meals, Internet, Playstation, piano, bike hiring, tours around the region, linen and sheets included in beds, no curfew... All the accommodations I can imagine.

Overall: 5. I passed one week working here, and I returned at the end of my Ireland trip to pass here my last days, only for pleasure. By far, the best hostel I've seen in my life.

This was a wonderful hostel to stay in (especially coming from a lack-luster one in Galway).. it is large but quiet, has fairly comfy beds, a wonderful, well equipped kitchen, great tv and common rooms and one of the most beautiful sceneries around. The staff was very helpful and friendly and even organized an Irish dance lesson from a great gentleman from Co. Cork. My friend and I stayed 2 nights, I could have stayed a week!

The Aghahoe House is an historic home that has been added to and well-maintained over the years. The views from the back rooms are AMAZING--the natural beauty of Killarney National Park. And bunnies are everywhere in the yard! The maze of hallways, comfortable sitting area and library make you feel at home in some sort of mysterious mansion. You do have to either walk about 30 minutes through the park to get to town, or you can take a taxi. But even the walk is beautiful. In my opinion, you can stay in a hostel near a pub in any Irish town, but the beauty of Killarney lies in its natural wonder. I reccommend getting out of town and experiencing the home hospitality of the Aghahoe House. They have bikes for hire and various other perks.
