We visited in early May of 1995. I was traveling with about ten friends who comprised a folk-music band. Rose and Owen not only put us up and kept us comfortable, and even came to hear the band play at the Jug of Punch. On those evenings when they didn't come out with us, the big woodstove was always left burning, with a kettle of hot water for tea to warm and comfort us on our return.I also hope to return for another visit.

Charming, simple, quiet, and fantastic views. If you're looking for sheep covered countryside divided by little stone fences and mist shrouded green hills and lakes this is your place. I escaped to this hostel after finding myself in Killarney the weekend of the W. Cup Ireland vs Spain and Co. Kerry vs Co. Cork (football/soccer) games. You'll get to sit and chat with other visitors, play with the dogs, watch the peacocks, read, and relax. The glassed in common area overlooks a lake and farmland, and has a great kitchen and comfy seats. It's a beautiful walk into the National park too. (Killarney is a little far for walking to). Wonderful hosts too, thank god they drove me there tho (I'd've gotten lost). Just don't forget to bring your bag of groceries!

The Peacock hostel was not easy to find by auto (they will come and pick you up in the nearest town if you come by bus/train) but worth the effort. My first view of it will always be remembered (I even got a photo) - after traveling on a narrow windy road, I crested a hill and in the distance saw the side of the house with the great peacock painted on it and a rainbow in the background. The hostel started out as a farm house, was a nursery for a while (which accounts for the glassed in areas along the parking area), and has been a hostel for many years. It is clean and the folks friendly. There are both private rooms and bunk rooms. Breakfast is not included, but a fridge and cooktop are available. The view is magnificent and this hostel was the highlight of our tour of Ireland (I brought my teenage son and a friend, we alternated between hostels and B&Bs. The boys weren't impressed with hostels with the exception of this one.). I wish we had given ourselves more time here and I do hope to return.
