Atrani rocks as a place to stay, the locals were really friendly and I had an absolute ball here. But I spent very little time in the hostel, it was so dark and stuffy and i got terrible allergies and the bathrooms - ok, so i wasn't expecting luxury - but they were just way too dark and depressing for my liking. Try and get an apartment in the village if you can - agreed, the breakfast is fantastic but it doesn't make up for the awful rooms.

Our stay at A' Scalinatella was wonderful, largely because of the two caring and helpful brothers who run the hostel. Through an oversight on our part in booking, we had a small dilemma but the brothers were very accomodating and the room was exactly what we needed and wanted- we had a four-bed private room, very close to the small beach in Atrani. One slight annoyance was the church bell that marked the hour and quarter hour, but it didn't interfere with sleep. The hostel is well-kept and the town of Atrani feels safe and welcoming- we even made a few local friends during our stay! Breakfast is served B&B style with Gabriele (one of the brothers) taking drink orders and bringing us croissants and jam- our favorite part were the cappuccini, always a good start to our days. The brothers enjoyed talking with us about our travels (in Italian and English- their English is excellent) and they were happy to give advice as to where to adventure next. The hostel is tucked away in beautiful Atrani, but is a 10-minute walk to Amalfi. We were easily able to visit Salerno, Pompeii, Paestum, and Capri on day trips. We highly recommend this hostel.

Having been to Atrani, staying at A Scalinatella, some six years ago, I returned now with my husband and daughter of seven months. Atrani was just as beautiful as I had remembered. We stayed in a lovely private apartement at the beautiful piazza of Atrani and enjoyed a week full of fantastic scenery, warmhearted welcoming and marvellous food. Our daughter became the mascot of the square - I can certainly recommend travelling here with children! For anyone who likes hiking, the region is also full of scenic walks. I almost wouldn't like to recommend this in public so I could keep the place for myself...

If you are looking for a cheap place to stay on the Amalfi coast, there is an alternative to the expensive hotels in Amalfi and Positano: The independent hostel A'Scalinatella in Atrani, which is situated right next to Amalfi - literally around the corner from Amalfi: 5-min walk. Homely place and helpful owners, with breakfast

We spent five days on the Amalfi coast, and the hostel was wonderful. We were able to get lots of information about the area, including maps and hiking trails as well as bus schedules. Any problems we had were quickly corrected by the helpful and english-speaking staff who did their utmost to help us out.In all we were very happy with the hostel and will recommend it to friends and family.

A Scalinatella is a perfect place for students and families who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Amalfi. It is a beach front hostel/hotel where you can enjoy wonderful service, warm showers and free breafasts in the piazza located right outside its doors. Scalinatella offers many rooms with private bathrooms and offers special rooms located in nearby Amalfi on a lemon farm which overlooks the beautiful Amalfi Sea.

Atrani is a tiny village right next to Amalfi, with its own beach. It's really a one-street one-square village and you can dive right in to this charm. Do try to take the 'ancient steps' to Amalfi which is a narrow path going through people's residences and hills. You need to strive with the locals in Italian to find out the right path. Very unique experience! The hostel is managed with a friendly man. But I didn't like the room; very humid, no windows, noisy shower rooms.. I lost tracks of time with the lack of sunlight, and I didn't feel very healthy staying here. Twenty-one euros for this was way too expensive. You can however count on their breakfast.

This place is a gem. A pearl in the sea. It's in a town named Atrani, which is about a pleasant 10 min. walk from the main town of Amalfi. The whole town of Atrani looks like something from a move. When you go there it's as if you just stepped onto a movie set. Not too many (if any) tourists besides people staying here. More locals than tourists. Old Italian fishermen, and little italian kids, sets the scene just right. As for the hostel, kind of tucked away and a little hard to find at first. The guys that own/run it are way authentic Italian. Kind of reminded me of Roberto Begnini from Life is Beatiful. If you're in the area, stay there, you'll be glad you did. Here is a picture of Atrani:http://community.webshots.com/photo/33243806/33246007KNXRzaP.S. IF ANYONE HAS A PICTURE OF THE HOSTEL ITSELF, THE BROTHERS THAT RUN IT, OR ANYTHING FROM ATRANI, PLEASE SHARE. Thanks :D

The town of Atrani is a gorgeous little jewel and worth a visit. The hostel can be noisy, the showers are odd (you can go to the toilet and shower at the same time) and the kitchen is not set up for communal meals. I left some detergent there but there was no other cleaning equipment and only one pot that you could cook out of. BUT it is cheap and the brothers are fun and nice and you are in a piece of heaven on the Amalfi coast!
