I found the character of this hostel genuinely friendly and helpful. It was clean and comfortable., May 10, 2007
Reviewer: there_and_back_again from Louisville, KY

Pros: The people working there at the time (summer 2006) were the best aspect.
Cons: I didn't see anything bad, but perhaps the steps and the need to share facilities are minuses.

It was hilarious to see that Simon the Cat is like a celeb in these reviews! So, I'll start with him. I like cats, and his fur wasn't shedding at the time, so I had no problems with him sleeping on my bed. He never did anything obnoxious as far as I was concerned. Just a nice cat.

The most notable part for me was that the staff were very helpful. They volunteered to help me truck my things up and down the steps (I was traveling by bicycle), they gave me information about the city, and as they were unable to accommodate me a second night, they phoned another spot not far from there and found me a room.

I wasn't scrutinizing every inch, but the place felt clean and comfortable, with a friendly vibe. In the evening a group were watching the TV. If you got unlucky and wound up with a rude group of fellow hostelers, then I imagine that might be a bad experience.

As for allusions to mafia activity in the east side, I can at least tell you that I had no problems. I detailed my trip on my cycle trip's site: http://www.englicious.com/__bike There you can see photos of the controversial cat and read more about my experience at the hostel and in Napoli.

I recommend this hostel and I enjoyed my brief stay there.

I have just returned from my trip in europe and was recounting the hostels i stayed in. This was the best. Naples would have been ho-hum with out This hostel, and the workers, Scott and Rachel, were truely above anything i would have expected. who would have thought an american and a kiwi could be that cool? The cat has to go, but that's easily solved. I hope to come back some day, and i know that hostel workers come and go, but i hope these two are replaced with carbon copies of themselves. I already miss the pizza too. and partying at piazza Blue MoMo.

Summary: Scott and Rachel should start hostels in their own cities and Go to Naples for the pizza and have the workers point you in the direction of Piazza Blue MoMo

I stay in Six Small Rooms one and a half years ago almost times now. Great place, lots of fun. To Ellen and Patrick, the nice Swedish couple who run the hostel...you were very useful for information on the local area and the maps. It is clean, small and has maybe twenty guests maximus. And the cat is not a problem. Ask for directions at the time of booking. Ignore bad reviews and complaints. Keep up the good work. Hello to the cat.

The hostel is very clean: the rooms, linen, and bathrooms.

It's not a pretty hostel (it definitely needs some work done) but it's cozy and comfortable. The staff is helpful and friendly.

The only bad thing was that at night people smoked way too much in the living room and kitchen so when we wanted to sleep the dorms were stinky.

Make sure you have the phone number with you because it's not easy to find.

I wasn't able to stay at this hostel and had some problems anyway: I wanted to book the hostel about a week before I came to Naples. They told me that was not possible and asked me to "just call the night before you want to come" at 10 pm. So I thought that wouldn't be a problem and called again the day before at 3pm or so. The woman told me to call again at 10pm. When I did this they said "Sorry, we're already booked out". That sucks... I don't like searching for a hostel at 10pm the night before I go to a city!

Why don't you allow reservations??? That's not a problem with other hostels, I would have left my credit card number, so there is no risk for you?!

6 Small Rooms is awesome and well worth the trip from the train station. Great people, great staff and lots of Peroni. Tubs and Dave are the best

OK, it's about time someone actually gave this hostel a good, honest review.

The hostel itself is not in the world's best condition. I have stayed in hostels (The Beehive in Rome comes to mind) with marble foyers and polished everything. But really, who cares - you pay hostel rates for CHEAP accomodation. And, having said that, it has most things you would want in a hostel (kitchen, single non-bunk beds, plenty of room, friendly helpful English-speaking staff, enough bathrooms to get everyone through in the morning, etc.). So, as the summary says, I found this hostel to be satisfactory - nothing more, nothing less. Bear that in mind, as the rest of this review is what I like to think of as "constructive criticism".

I also note that the beds and sheets were meticulously clean when we were there - absolutely no sign of bedbugs. Maybe the dude below was carrying them around with him...

All that said, I had 3 gripes while staying there:

1. Simon the cat is a little ****. I will admit I'm not a cat person, but I can put up with them if required. However Simon tends to curl up on random beds, leaving cat hair all over them and your luggage. However the worst experience was waking up, wandering into the shower still half asleep, getting undressed and into the shower, wondering what the awful smell is and then realising you've almost trodden in a freshly steaming cat turd. Yes, that happened to me. So solution number 1: Simon has got to go. The staff are entertainment enough.

2. While the interior of the hostel itself is in reasonable condition, the rest of the building (entranceway, etc.) is a bit run down. Holes in the concrete and gaping cracks in the paint do tend to put people off (as you can tell from some of the reviews below). Solution 2: get the body corporate to fix up the building a bit.

3. Naples is a pretty crummy place to stay in general. You are warned not to enter the Eastern half of the city as it is rife with Mafia and crime. The remaining "safe" half is only marginally better. The streets were full of garbage (of both the regular and human variety) and turds (again, of both the animal and apparently human variety), moreso than any other city I saw in Italy. One night I witnessed an all-in brawl of about 10 people break out in a pub just around the corner from the hostel. True, the city does seem to have a certain charm to it, but it's very hard to see underneath all that excrement, and probably not worth the effort in itself. If you are going there to visit places like Pompeii or Capri, then it's probably worth it - but don't go to see Naples by itself, IMHO. Solution 3: well, there's not much the owners can do about this one, really...

Of our 3 months in Italy the only other rival to this place was Fattoria Bassetto in Tuscany. The lovely staff and atmosphere at 6 small rooms was a pure delight. Naples IS mad and chaotic, Blah, blah blah, as if you don't know that before you get there. It's, anyway, a blast and with the sancuary that is 6 smallies it's a must do on your Italian itinerary.

The kitchen is simply the best, the staff are simply the best, the cat, Simon, is simply the best (and cutest), the location is simply the best, the beer lady is simply the best (and very bloody handy) and Neopolitan food is hands down simply the best.

Will thoroughly recommend to anyone and everyone.
