Best hostel ever visited!
7 June 2007

Pros: Staff, atmosphere, location - everything!
Cons: That you have to have 5c when you arrive to use the lift. Breakfast not very inspiring.

I have travelled a lot in Italy, but this is frankly the best hostel I have stayed at. They have a fully equipped kitchen, the staff is extremely nice and they help you with anything. I thought the free pasta would be some cheap crap, but it was plentyful and delicious. The pizza place that they take you to is the best, better than the ones in the guide books (I tried them as well). Location is ideal, right by the port. Free Internet, a big TV with satellite and DVDs. Nice, big lockers in room. I'm a bit picky when it comes to breakfast, but room tempered milk is not my cup of tea.

Easily my most memorable hostel experience in Europe. The staff are just so incredibly friendly, they really make it like home. All the other people staying there also seem to be very friendly types, you walk in and everybody say "hi, g'day, etc". It's in a great location, the security is excellent, it's clean, it's perfect really.

When we showed up at 2pm, we were told that our reservation had been cancelled, even though the check in time was until 2pm. We were initially planning on getting there very early in the morning after taking an overnight train and had emailed the hostel to see if we could check in at 6am. Because of this, when we hadnt showed up at 10am, they gave our room away. (the reason we came later than planned was because there had been a train strike and our overnight train had been cancelled) Someone who had been staying at the hostel for over a week told us that she has seen them cancel reservations like that everyday, for no good reason, so make sure you call and confirm your reservation ahead of time, and be there when you say you will be there. At least, the staff helped us find another place for that night.

The other place was crappy (albergo Candi) so we went back to the Hostel of the sun for the following two nights.

Make sure you have a 5 cent coin in your pocket when you get there, you will need it for the elevator on week days. Otherwise, you're up for a long climb (7 stories).

The location is decent, not too hard to find, but quite a walk from the train station (there is a bus that connects the two if you dont feel like walking. The area around the station doesnt seem very safe, so i suggest you do take the bus). Once you have reach the hostel, you are at walking distance from most attraction, including the ferry to Capri.

The hostel was clean, including the washroom and showers. There was a bit of a lineup for the washroom at rush hours but it was manageable. Rooms had sinks, so you didnt have to wait in line just to brush your teeth!

The common room was alright, a table and a couch, plus a computer near the registration desk. People would sit there and chat, it wasnt really a party place. (but since there is no curfew you can go out and party somewhere else)

There was no real kitchen, but at least there was a fridge. The breakfast was included (cold cereals, crackers with jam, coffee/tea/juice) and you could eat as much as you want.

There also were laudry facilities (expensive)

The staff were nice and helpful except for one girl who seemed to always be in a bad mood.

Even though we initially had problems with the hostel, I really liked it and would stay there again

To call this hostel the best in Italy is a little over the top. Yes it is clean and the staff are nice, but that is about all you can say. The common room is small and there is very little atmosphere.

It is located on the 7th floor of an old building near the port - great if you need to get up early to catch a ferry, but not great if you are out at night - a pretty dodgy part of town.

If you need a bed for a night I would recommend it as a good place to get some sleep, but if you are looking for good time and a place to meet people I would suggest you look elsewhere.

Maybe this place is like the rest of Naples - you either fall in love straight away, or you can't wait to get out.

Well we stayed there for 7 nights and were warmly welcomed. We made a reservation and it wasnt a problem at all, the staff gave us very good information on getting there. We couldnt make the check in time and that wasnt a problem either they held the beds for us. The staff are extremely friendly and very informative. The hostel is clean and a relaxed enviroment. The bathroom is very neat and well equipped. The hostel is right in the area you want to be, near the ferry to Capri, sita bus to Pompeii and the 'waterfront' area is nearby which boasts great food and a good vibe, the alibus stops near the entrance and the main shopping street is just a stone throw away. We had a great time and will definatly be returning to the Hostel of the Sun. It was my first trip to Italy and it totally blew me away. There were no problems with crime the only problem we came across was the lack of english spoken. Great food and amazing sites, Napoli is a definate stop on any travellers trip. Thanks for the hospitality!

I stayed in Naples a couple of days at the beginning of January 2004.

Being there around christmas seems to be a very good period: there is a wonderful street called San Gregorio d'Armeno full of cribs and christmas decorations with plenty of nice coloured lights.

Hostel of the Sun is a great place! I found the hostel comfy and safe... just like home.

The common room is the social centre of the hostel. You can watch videos and talk to most of the people staying there which is even nicer if you travel on your own!

Its nice and clean. The bathrooms have nice hot water and the kitchen is very handy to save a bit of money!

The atmosphere is very friendly. Stefano and Luca really make you feel the spirit of this city!

They are always ready to give you all the information you need. Suggestions of nice places to see and how to get there.

There are just so many things to see there (don't miss the Napoli sotterranea guide tour!) that it's nice to know that an "home sweet home" is waiting for you after your exhausting day walking around the city!

Definitely recommend Hostel of the Sun to all the backpackers also for its great location either to go and visit the surroundings or to make the most the night life in Naples!

Arriving in Napoli can be a bit chaotic -- it makes Rome seem like a coutry town! It is a fascinating place though and work a peek, if only for a day. Hint: it is often quicker to walk from the train station than to take the bus, which is almost guaranteed to get stuck in Napoli's legendary traffic.

As for the hostel, I would like to let everyone know that the price listed above on this website is incorrect! It costs 18 euros a night (in January). Aside from this little surprise and my opinion that this is a little on the high side for an off-season rate, it is a lovely little hostel with excellent, accomodating staff. And if you need a night to relax from travelling, or you are too overwhelmed by the streets of Napoli, you can enjoy a movie from their wide selection of DVD's (not surprisingly, many of them star Al Pacino and other Italian-American icons!).
