I have stayed at this place two times to save money and had no problems. We never experienced crime or being approached. It's a big city ...period and you need to be smart no matter what city you are in. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and we have no complaints with that. I researched Naples before I went there and knew just what I was in for. No big deal, but then again I'm from the Philadelphia area and that is the ass of the world my friends. Look, I'm in my 40's and even took my family there. I was and always am looking for adventure and a new experience. Dangerous, Naples was not and I didn't getthat feeling any time I was near there at at this location (near the train station). Nobody tried to pick my pocket, sell us drugs or approach us for sex. We got a clean, safe room for a cheap price. That's all I wanted and that's what I received.

I stayed at this hostel with a friend in January of 2002 for 2 nights. Masochists will love this place. At night, you will most likely be followed by thieves and harassed by drug dealers...as we were...especially if you're a group of girls. Then if you make it back to the hostel, there will be no heat in your room (in winter) and the windows that overlook the noisy streets are broken so the room will be unbearably cold. We slept in mittens, several pairs of socks, scarves, and hats and could not take showers for fear of pneumonia. In the morning however, when you think that the nightmare is finally over, that cranky little woman at the front desk will throw you a chocolate (?) quasi-croissant and will be really put out by your requests for (God forbid) information about local sites. The only reason we are giving this place 1 star is Stefano, the very tall, older gentleman at the front desk. He was helpful and a very pleasant man to deal with. If you are planning to go to the Campania region, stay in a nicer city like Sorrento or Positano....don't stay in Naples!! It is VERY unsafe.

This place is very very ordinary. Just like Naples itself, it is clean, unfriendly, and you had the vague feeling that you needed to constantly watch your back. Despite only having a handful of beds, the staff seemed completely uninterested in helping out the few people who were actually there. I also suspect that 5 people in the tiny room toward to front is a significant fire hazard.

Breakfast was okay though, and the toilets clean. I suspect most people only stay here if the much better Hostel of the Sun is full. Given they are owned by the same folks, I think that´s the idea. Stick to the Hostel of the Sun if you can.

If you are in Napoli you should get out while you are alive. This place is a 3rd world city!!! Tramps, pimps, and whores! And the crime is everywhere. This hostel is basic, very basic but the brothers who run it are very helpful. Shame about the hookers over the road and the drug dealers next door. No joke.

Mancini was close to the station and to the main walking tour areas of Naples. We didn't love Naples, apart from the amazing pizza, and didn't stay long, one night and a day out to Pompeii. This hostel was clean, good in-room shower and the staff member was helpful in trying to help us book beds for our next stop - we were either going to an island or straight up to Rome and they rang around for us to see what was available. It was at this hostel that we found an ad for a fantastic place in Venice that we stayed at (Alloggi La Gondola only E40 for a double in Sept!). So that made it more worthwhile for us as we never saw that place advertised anywhere else.

I consider Naples to be the ass of Italy and the neighborhood that this hostel is located in to be a wart on that ass. The area around Hostel Mancini is a real assault on the senses. It's ugly, dirty and the street noise is loud and constant. During the day the area is a giant open air market. After dark the market is closed and the freaks come out. Hookers, junkies and assorted other riff-raff were all visible from the balcony of our room. Walking around neighborhood in evening was not comfortable.

The actual facilities of the hostel were average. Security is very good (which is especially important in this locale). The bed was fine and there was a television. On the other hand, the toilet didnt flush very well and the shower had a leak in it, flooding the bathroom whenever it was used. Hostel staff was unresponsive to requests to repair leaky showerhead.

I give this hostel only 1 star because the din from the street below was intolerable. Vendors loudly set up their market stands (just below the hostel windows) VERY early in morning. From then on sleep is all but impossible for even the soundest of sleepers.

Breakfast left much to be desired - lukewarm instant coffee and a freeze dried croisant.

Do yourself a favor and stay in a better area (like Sorrento). It may cost a bit more, but it's WELL worth it.

This hostel has small rooms with the bathroom down the hall. It is difficult to find on account of a huge street market taking place in the surrounding neighborhood. We were up all night to the sounds of people cleaning up the market area, including breaking glass and shouting all night and really noisy garbage trucks just outside the window at 4 AM. The staff was helpful enough, but not overly enthusiastic, bathrooms could be cleaner, but not the worst I have seen. Free lockers are the only real perk, but not a horrible place to stay for a night or two.
