The Salerno Youth Hostel was an OK place to stay - the beds are good, and the rooms aren't crowded, so I'd recommend it if you're simply looking for a place to crash for the night. The bathrooms were a bit of a disaster - no shower head on one, and lots of mildew and the like. A scrub and a plumber, and this place would be fine. The walk to the hostel is long, but there are no hills, so it's not too taxing. And for those arriving in Salerno at night, walking down the main street is no problem - there are lots of people out until well after midnight. An internet cafe just around the corner (Via Roma) charges some of the cheapest rates in Italy (E3.00 an hour)One small warning though - while I was there, someone in the hostel had their travel pack stolen from the "minding" place at the front near reception desk. As a safer alternative, ask another hosteller to mind your pack in their room...

I stayed in a dorm, which cost E 14 per night, including breakfast. You must be a HI member to stay at this hostel. The only real disadvantage about the place is the fact that it's quite far to/from the trainstation. But once you've got there its easy to go to all the touristy places: Pompeii, Vesuvio, Capri, Amalfi coast etc. Some bathrooms can't be locked and have 3 showers in one room but you'll get used to that pretty soon. Besides, if you make good agreements with your roommates they will respect your privacy. Dorms are clean and spacious but they also offer 2,3,4 bed-rooms. Breakfast is one of the best I've had in a youth hostel (bread rolls, jam, butter, tea, coffee, water etc.) location is quiet and Salerno is a very Italian town with not many tourists from abroad. I REALLY enjoyed staying here but I've not given it 5 stars because of the bathrooms, and location could have been better too.

Seriously, this is the best hostel i have ever stayed in. salerno is beautiful and this place is more like a hotel. The hostel is an old monestry and parts of the building date back over 1000 years. despite the building age the rooms are imaculate as is the rest of the hostle and staff are kidders. To get there take the first right out of the station and continue about 1.5 ks through the main st, under the archway then take a right.
