The proprietor, Francesco, is a kind and generous person who works very hard to make sure that people enjoy their stay: everything is well kept, clean and relaxed. Relaxed: things are not fussed over; there is a slightly unkempt aspect to things that is in perfect sync with the city and its attractions, worthwhile unto themselves. The architecture is splendid: the trompe lóeil mural in the hallways and the cloister are remarkable. There are a pair of cats to keep guests company.

The lack of a working kitchen for guests is problematic.

The Internet machine (?) is a masterpiece of stupidity.

The absence of high-tech anything is welcome.

Occasionally, there are obnoxious school groups who trash the bathrooms or make too much noise :-/

We stayed in this hostel for one night this summer and really enjoyed it. We had an 8 people dormitory for ourselves with two people. The rooms, which cost 15 euros p.p., was rather simple but spacious with nice big lockers. The breakfast is pretty good in comparison with most Italian hostels.

But in any case the location in an old building belonging to a basicilica is beautiful and makes up for anything. Further on, if you are looking for a real Italian beautiful city far away from all tourism, Reggio Emilia should be your target. There you will find Italy as it really is and not some fake tourist-Italy like in Florence for example.

Overall I would definitely recommend the hostel because of the great location in a wonderful city.

Well imagine living in a basilica. Gleaming marble, 15 feet ceiling height and spotless bathrooms. Very grand, but rather impersonal and cold. All other guests turned out to be either italian labour or families passing through.

Rather cheap and not a bad place to stay if you're going to Reggio nell'Emilia anyway.

We (a family with 3 kids) had just one night in this hostel in October. We were using it as a stopover in order to get to the Ferrari Mueum in Modena. How we wished we had planned to stay longer! The hostel is magnificent. Located in a splendidly restored old building attached to the Basilica. The rooms are reasonably spacious, and ours had a clean, roomy bathroom - the best we came across in any hostel we stayed in. Breakfast was very good. Reggio Emilia was quiet at night, and it was a little difficult to find somewhere to eat, but we arrived very late. The locals were very friendly and helpful - not too overused by tourists. I'm not sure how much there is to see in the area, but would have liked a day to poke around Reggio Emilia. It is great accommodation for 14.50 euro (in family room), and is very close to Modena and Bologna.
