Hmm well i happened upon this by chance, but to my surprise was really quite good. As all the others mentioned it was really clean, good food which was cheap (and inclusive breakfast i think.,...), and they had the spare towels etc. along with and internet that Actually worked and a phone that didnt keep cutting out. By most bp's standards this has outdone itself already. The view? fantastic, and the 'forum' aspect was delightful, a look see on to the aquarium and the ever polluting harbour of Italian merchant shipping (not much changed since the 15th century), and copious amounts of nicely arranged benches allowed a good mix of people and ease of meeting. Out of the way? who cares..walk or get the bus..thats what we're supposed to do anyway...

I stayed here in May. The hostel was really far away from the station (we are talking 20 min. bus ride) but the bus ride is up lots and lots of hills, so the view is nice. The hostel itself was very clean, and institutional... they have lockers and you can use your own lock (free) or borrow one from them (deposit). The hostel is pretty isolated, so that was why I didn't give it 4 or 5 stars. It was comfy, and I slept fine. It is not a good base for exploring though, so we took off after one night. It is too far from everything to be good for exploring. My recommendation if you are going near Cinque Terre, is staying at the hostel in Levanto (under the cinque terre section of this site). That place was amazing. It had bathrooms attached on each room, and was really close to the beach! :) this one in genoa is fine to crash at though, but not the best i've stayed in.

Out of the way and no character, but clean and cheap, April 3, 2003

I stayed at this hostel in the summer of '99 and I thought that it was fine. It was quite clean and the food in the cafeteria was cheap and good, but I also agree with everyone else that it is out of the way. You have to take a bus to get to it. It really does lack character, but it's fine if you just need a place to rest your weary head at night.

Very nice personnel, clean rooms and bathrooms. Tasty food at reasonable prices in a bar in the hostel. The hostel is situated on a high hill, what on the one hand forces you to take a bus (there are several municipal buses per hour), but on the other hand you can see a beautiful view of the whole Genova from there. The hotel is definitely recommendable, especially for that price.

This is your prototypical HI hostel -- institution feel, low on character, a bit out of the way. The hostel does benefit from large rooms, was well kept and clean and the staff was polite.

The hostel is located out of town in a hilly neighborhood of Genoa, it is absolutely impossible to expect to walk anywhere from this location. The bus line stops conveniently in front of the hostel, but you will be dependent upon this bus line to either arrive or depart.

The dining area does serve affordable and fair (not great) food. You had better like it -- because of the distance from town and the need to use public transport, this is very likely where you will be dining for the night. Fortunately, the dining area proved to be pretty sociable -- due to the hostel's distance from town, the hostel will probably prove to be your one nightlife opportunity, and many of the other guests will be with you.

The hostel's primary problem is that of location -- the area isn't bad, but if you wish to explore the town, you are not well situated to do so. It's a fair hostel, but not a place for which I'd go out of my way to stay.

Note: I would also not recommend using Genoa as a base to visit the Cinque Terre. It is quite easy to find more conveniently located accomodation either in or nearby that part of Italy -- a stay at the Genoa HI as a frequent daytrip base is simply not worth the trouble.

We used Genoa as a convenient place to along this area of the Italian Riviera. It is possible to visit the popular Cinque Terre from here as well. The staff was nice, there was helpful brochures and information easily ready for all activities in and around Genoa. The rooms were large and spacious, and the bathroom facilities were clean. It is a bit out of town, up a hill overlooking the town, so I would never reconmend walking up it, especially with your packs. It is easily accessible with the bus routes. The food that was served here was also good, and considerably cheap, 2,50 euro for a plate. In all, it is reconmendable.
