I've been living here as part of my study abroad program and I will say that it is a good place to stay. Of course it doesn't have all the comforts of home but what hostile does? So far it has been clean, each room has its own bed and sink along with sheets and towels that are provided. IT IS still a convent and mass goes on every sunday. It is an historial place as well and one of the places to visit in Genova as listed in many tourist books, since it is located in the historical district.

I have no idea what the previous reviewer is talking about. The staff was not very friendly and the bathrooms were AMAZINGLY dirty. To make matters worse, I was staying in a room with two women who LIVED in the hostel. They had their things all over the place, had their own TV (which they watched well into the night), food everywhere, a kitchen set up, etc.I had little room for my own things and felt very uncomfortable like I was invading their space.

I stayed in 5 different hostels in Italy, and this one was by far the best. This hostel is formerly a monestary, and it still looks like it. The rooms are beautiful, with cathedral ceilings and tall windows. At night the hallways around the outdoor courtyard light up, and it is a fantastic sight. Even the clock face on the attached bell tower lights up at night! It is still even part of a working church, and the bell chimes in the morning. The people who run it are very helpful and friendly. Santa Maria di Castello is a short walk from the Palazzo di Alessandria, and the wonderful surrounding restaurants. This hostel and town were definitely the highlight of my trip, which is saying a lot because I visited some pretty amazing places! As a side note I would like to add that this hostel also has private rooms, and the general atmosphere is EXTREMELY ROMANTIC! I would definitely recommend it as a honeymoon getaway.
