BUG review
Alessandro Palace is a very nice big hostel near Termini station. Most rooms have en suite bathrooms, plus there is the usual kitchen, TV lounge, Internet access as well as air conditioning and a bar. They were renovating when we visited.
About BUG's hostel reviews
This hostel was visited by one of BUG's team of hostel inspectors who write independent reviews and assess a star rating based on an objective assessment criteria.
We show up unannounced at hostels to write honest and unbiased hostel reviews. Many of BUG's reviews now feature videos and photo slideshows. BUG never receives payment for listing any establishment and BUG's researchers never accept free accommodation in exchange for favourable reviews.

Having recently stayed in this hostel I can say that it hasn't improved since the earlier reviews. The staff are still rude and unhelpful. I think they believe being cheeky and acting superior is endearing. To be fair, there was one nice receptionist but the one we dealt with mostly (Luca) is irritating at best.We went on to stay at the Yellow hostel just around the corner. It has everything that Alessandro's promises and a much better atmosphere. Plus it has an actual bar and not a sorry excuse for a common room.
"Las Vegas" atmosphere. Clean, but plastic and fake. 8 June 2007
Pros:
Good location, close to Termini.
Cons:
Not very nice nor helpful staff, everything looks as if it's made out of plastic

Perhaps the plastic "Roman" theme works with Americans who would not care if they were in Rome or in some replica in Vegas, but to me it was tacky. Staff weren't very helpful. Sure, I already knew my way around Rome, but how could they know? Checked out after one night. Expensive too.

How this hostel was able to be included in the 'Europe's Famous Hostels' marketing drive is BEYOND me---if I could give it no stars, I would! My first hiccup came with my booking. I had booked by phone the day before, a bed for 3 nights in a female dorm. When I arrived at the hostel, I was told by Luca that there was no way I could of made the booking, because they required a CC deposit, which I had not been asked for - but my booking had been guaranteed by the guy I spoke to, and when I offered up my card number, he declined (this was travelling in November). Luca then told me he couldn't accomodate me in a female dorm, but a mixed dorm. That wouldn't of been a problem, but he called me a liar to my face, and accused me of making up the fact that I had called ahead and booked a bed. Rude rude rude-that is NO WAY to conduct business, and anyone even considering staying here should be very cautious. Being tired and annoyed, I stayed for the first night and then moved to another hostel. Well, the room was okay, and it was good that the rooms were en-suite, but I got a bad case of bedbugs from the hostel-anyone who's had bedbugs knows that it is the grossest feeling ever. Yes, this hostel is close to the station, and they offer free pizza, but with rude, unhelpful and infuriatingly stupid staff AND bedbugs, my best bet is to stay elsewhere-anywhere!

I stayed there for 5 days this summer and it was for me the first time in a hostel. I found it very good. It was a small room but clean en cosy. Breakfast was not very great, but that`s Italy. I can recommend this hostel very much.

I was there Christmas 2004, I stayed for 5 days.It was a great location close to a lot of facilities, great rooms.I recommend it, free maps, good lockers (small though), free pizza at night (save$$$!), great breakfast great for socializing and single travellers. The only problem I had was the mixed dorms. I had previously requested all female dorms but the day I arrived they were really all mixed dorms, if you dont mind that then I recommend it. It was safe though, the staff was friendly, helpful and I would go there again.Good value I reckon.

I stayed in the Alessandro Palace in January this year for a week. I was in a 10 bed dorm. It was really just an old converted bedroom, with an ensuite. It is a fantastically clean place to stay with really comfy beds and a good bar. Free dinner every night helps to save $$$$!! You are a close walk to Termini, but be cautious if you are a girl alone at night. It's safe - just keep your eyes open! The staff are also lovely and go out of their way to make you feel at home. I got sick whilst staying here and the staff were just fantastic in making me comfortable!

This hostel is close to Termini and is clean and secure. But to me, 9 people was too many to share a room with and I wasn't given a choice to be in a 6-share room even though I reserved about 6 weeks in advance. I also didn't like the fact that the common areas were often smoky. However, the real problem was with the shower. Possibly due to low water pressure or insufficient water supply, water coming out of the shower and the tap at wash basin was no more than a trickle, so washing was difficult. On one cold November night, there wasn't even hot water. Reservation process wasn't fuss-free either. They didn't bother responding to my fax reservation and follow up email until I rang them from Australia more than a week later.

I can warmly recommend this hostel with a friendly and genuinely nicestaff. Despite 30 degrees you had a good night sleep thanks toair-conditioning, the rooms were clean and neat with a very nicebathroom. Who can ever complain about free breakfast, free pizza threenights a week, and a great bar with a friendly atmosphere including askilled bartender and happy hour for only 30 euros per night. During myfirst stay in Rome I lived in another hostel, but thanks to my friendswho stay at Alessandro Palace, we always ended up sitting in their bar. Therefore, coming back to Rome with my mother and father, the choice ofhostel was not that hard. We can highly recommend it and many thanks tothe staff at Alessandros
