Freedom Traveller offers a good price and a handful of perks that are attractive to budget-conscious travellers: free breakfast and (basic) dinner and free internet. These three can easily offset 5-10 euros of expense for some travellers and make it an attractive option. But I have the impression that they offer these extras because they realize they are not able to offer some things that I would have liked to see and you might also: their security arrangements are terrible, hot water for showers seems to be nonexistent and some of the rooms run toward grundgy. We stayed at FT for 3 days and might come back again but I never felt that our gear was secure and sure would find a decent shower before coming next time. CONThe hostel operates out of a number of parts of some older walkups in an area of Rome convenient to the train station. With a separate entry for reception & lounge and another for the free meals restaraunt and at least two more for rooms (we were moved once in our 3 days) the security is clearly tough for them to maintain. There are different keys, buzzers, inner and outer doors and keypads depending on where you want to go. This sounds good but the end result is that very few of our fellow hostellers even bothered to close doors behind them, much less lock them. Since the rooms do not offer any lockers (or any storage at all that we saw), we ended up counting on the 2, 3, or 4 flight climb to our room to discourage intruders. The showers are abominable. Choose between a dribble of boiling hot water or an icy-cold full pressure spray. No choice, really. Oddly the sinks have decent hot water and I was only one of a number of folks who discussed how to shampoo in a sink. Our first room was a 6x without bunks, a surprise, but also a very grubby, barebones place. Two 6x's and an 8x sharing two bathrooms made for a line in the morning. Our second room was a more typical 6x in 3 bunks sharing a kitchen and a nice terrace with another 6x, but the lack of storage meant lots of gear strewn around the floors.PROThe staff are almost all friendly and helpful. The breakfast is a few steps above the usual 'continental' fare in Italy (toast, cereal, 'sausages' (mini hotdogs), hardboiled eggs and juice.. a good feed. The free dinner is a basic pasta-n-sauce with an option for seconds. Toss in the free internet on 3 or 4 terminals and you can save some serious bucks staying here.

The pub crawl is great... I definitely recommend taking the walking tour as well - you're able to see everything in Rome with a great guide who is able to explain it all... I've stayed at this hostel twice and enjoyed both times.

Just thinking about it brings back so many wonderful memories. This hostel rocks.I think I could quite easily end my review there as it sum sit up entirely. But I won't.Really near the train staion. If you can't see it walking down the street look for an internet access place and people hanging out the front, sitting on mopeds, probably speaking a few different languages.Made feel at home: in a big way. Perhaps my friend and I were lucky with the people in our room , I don't know. But the staff also, you respect them and treat them accordingly and they will pay you the same compliment. Set up is unusual, the rooms are located in adjoining apartment blocks, odd?, who cares?. The kitchen and terace is located in one of these so if you don't know where it is just ask. Kitchen: a great place to start a dinner with 2-3 people where it turns into a 6 hour discussion of up to 10 people or more. You don't need to go out if your not up for it and you can still have a blast. Tours: GO ON THEM. Don' complain 'oh they cost whatever', dirt cheap for what you get out of them. My friend and I stayed near the end on September and at that time the group was not large so the tour did feel personal and informal but I think it would be like that all year round. But the tours are given with feeling by people who know what they are talking about and are happy to hear your point of view or get into discussion with you.Once you have done the tour you will also know how to find your way around Rome, I promise you. Pub Crawl: a must. Wether you drink or not. Start off with food and alcohol at the hostel, get chatting to strangers, move to the pub they are suddenly your new best friend, meet new strangers, they become your even newer best friends and you all stumble home together safley. Don't know how, I don't remember walking home one night. Curfew: there is NONE. Amazing. 24 hour reception. At 6 in the morning it can be a fun place to be hanging out. Ok other bits and pieces. The Dorms:Good, I liked. 12 in a room, guys and girls. No problems encounterd. (At this point I had moved in with and stayed with people I had met five minutes before a t a train staion, I would have slept on a park bench with a hobo if he seemed like a nice guy.) But seriously, no probs with anyone, noise, stuff getting stolen, nothing. It was intersting to see peolple move out and new ones move in and sit around and talk about individual experiences. Bathrooms: not a loss, no complaints. There were only two on our floor, but you never found yourself waithing more than 5-10 mins. (Again I will point out this was the end of September, but the floor I think was full all the same.)Washing facilities: I didn't use. Heard they were ok. To go to the laundromat was rougly the same I think. Maybe slightly better value.Breakeast Room: didn't have too many people in it when we were there. But the photos are good to look at. If you have a few spare minutes. Breakfeast: alright for the first few days. Oh but the day we left, the restaraunt had opened up and oh the breakfeast was glorious. Cereal, juice, toast, croissants, eggs, sausages, oh just glorious. I don't think I've had as good a breakfeast since I got home. So good. My friend and I flew home that day and I think it practically lasted us till we got to our front doors that night. But overall it ROCKED. Just rocked. The people who worked there were lovely. Yes its their jobs, but they seemed very genuine about it, (tour guides in particular). Basically Talk to people, show respect, don't be an ASS, or you wont enjoy yourself. Honestly I can't think of anything to complain about.Stay at Freedom Traveller, and no its not expensive for 20. It's damn well worth it.

I suppose if you want to party and travel rock bottom cheap - you'll make the compromises needed when staying here. I thought our private room had dingy walls and floor and kinda had that strange smell. They do a 10am - 2-m lockout, presumably to clean the room - but did not clean ours. Still the staff seemed friendly and honest, which is something when staying in a strange place, though that's not enough for me to go back.

This was the best hostel we have been in ever! From the moment we walked in we were made feel like we had always been there. The staff are so FRIENDLY and love to chat. 24 hour check-in, but get there early, it fills up!The dorms are buzzing with people of different nationalities and everyone introduces themselves and has a laugh together. The bathrooms are clean and the dorms are neat and well kept also. There is a kitchen where everyone meets and cooks so you can have dinner with someone different every evening, or just meet and CHILL OUT. Everyone hangs out on the street too, so if you find it hard to see the office on via gaeta look for a gang of people! The BREAKFAST as of mid september 2003 is fabulous! Its served in the restaurant next door, and you get sausages, eggs, toast, cereal, pastries, juice, tea, etc. The TOURS of the city given by the hostel are well worth it as they are informal yet well organised and another good way to get to kno people. The tourguides are great fun and know so much about the city, in many languages. The PUB CRAWLS are the best ever! The hostel is in such a good area for pubs, especially Irish pubs! You get a meal and wine at the hostel first and then head out, after that its a FREE shot in every pub! Its a social highlight of the week.Even if you want to do your own thing freedom traveller is worth staying at for its LOCATION alone, as its 5 mins from termini station, easy to find and surrounded by shops and cafes.Freedom traveller excellent for any backpacker. KUDOS to the staff who make such a friendly atmosphere. For me its a GOOD ENOUGH REASON TO GO BACK TO ROMA!!!!

Ok, you need to understand that they have a few differant appt. buildings that you will be put into. The one I had was just fine, I would have stayed again. Bathroom and bd rooms were nice. I found this place at 10:30 at night and lucked out with the quality, I wasnt expecting much so this blew me away.

I stayed for 5 nights and really enjoyed the people I met, a great mix of nationalities. The kitchen wasn't bad and the porch was nice (though locked sometimes for unexplained reasons). THe location was safe and close to the Termini and grocery store. The bathrooms were nasty and almost always full. I thought my bed was going to colapse everytime the guy above me came back at 3 in the morning, and no A/C so the window was open and the street sweepers could get loud. They did change the sheets between people. I don't think I'd stay there again but it wasn't bad. I'd never stayed in a hostel before and was pretty scared by some of the reviews but over all it was a good experience.

Ok, as hostels go, this wasn't all that bad. Beds were alright and the price was reasonable. And then there's free dinner. If you're travelling by yourself, it is a a great chance to meet others. The problem was, there was no hot water...... and although I didn't lose my bed to anyone(maybe someone did lose their beds to us), it did happen to me elsewhere and I know how that feels. So if you read any more reviews of that happening, I suggest you go to a different place during the warmer months and only risk it if you are either arriving early or in winter. The last thing you want is to hang around the station area late at night, alone, without a place to go to. Oh and Guido IS a bit.... creepy.
