Although we had a little trouble finding the place (you have to press a buzzer to get in and we walked right past it at first), we were really pleased with it when we finally got in and put our stuff down. While it's true that it's a little cramped and warm (especially in July, when we went), everyone staying there was really friendly and it's the atmosphere that I'll always remember it for. The owners were helpful and put you at your ease, especially Kumar dancing to the music from Kill Bill. Hmm what else? The area is a little rough, as it's right next to the train station, but it also has the advantage of being cheap, and there's a great little market just down the road where we got some pasta and sauce to cook in the kitchen for about 34 euro cents. Most major sites are within walking distance; on our first day in Rome we picked a street at random to walk down and ended up at the collosseum. The only problem for us was the lockout during the hottest part of the day when we wanted to siesta, and some of the street noises at night, which wasn't the fault of the hostel. I'd recommend Freestyle to anyone who isn't an antisocial hermit crab!

The Freestyle was the first hostel we stopped at during our month long tour of Europe, and at first it was alittle shock to the system. The very full rooms, tiny reception, grafittied walls and only two showers did scare me at first. But the best thing at Freestyle isn't the beds (mine broke), or the kitchen (which is tiny) its the atmosphere. Everyone is very friendly here and I had a great time. In the evening, reception is great fun, with communal meals and free gifts of clothes from the guy at reception. The location is good, easy walking distance from termini station, however the streets are alittle scary at night if you are on your own, so stay in and have a beer! Overall, not the lap of luxury but a fun place to stay anyway.

Always remember to book it through internet, writing them email or calling them will not work. We arrived there late in the evening and surprised to find that there are no reservation for us at all although we called them twice and even asked our Italien friend to call them and got the confirmation. They have only 3 rooms and 2 with 10 and 12 beds respectively. But if you are "lucky" to be put to the third room, i think you will definitly move out the next day. They have some kind of water pump installed on top of that room and whenever anybody is using water, no matter hot or cold, there will be great noise in that room. We didn't get any sleeping time at that night at all! We didn't expect too much from a hostel, but this one is definitely the worst i have ever been.

we booked this hostel over internet first of all because off the uncompetitive low price of 12euro! everything worked out fine and the beds we're made in a 8 bed dorm! not 10 or more, like others say! clean sheets included, no need of sleepingbag! the "chief" of the place is the best of all, gives you hints, a hug and if you are nice, shares real indian food and a beer!!! there are two bathrooms for no more than 24, but clean and hot water! breakfast consists of coffee, tea and milk+croissants with chocolate. the italian standard and more... best is the kitchen for your own pastadinner (rome is quite expensive...) bring a small lock to close your staff in the lockers! the location is perfectly close to termini amd all the other sites can be reached in 30min by foot (did not use bus in one week!) no curfew, safe place, not seen any bad guys in the streets nearby!!

The staff was great and we felt as if we were home. We didn't even think to move to another hostel while staying for a week in Rome. Definately a hostel we recommend.

Freestyle Hostel is not the place to stay if you want to keep to yourself and be lonely. The "problem" with this place is everyone seems to want to know each other and give useful travel tips. I got warnings from fellow hostel mates not to stay at camping grounds in Venice in winter (even though they are cheap) because of the cold. The owner, Kumar, is nice and helpful and will try to help solve your last-minute travel disasters. In all, the hostel has a personal touch and of course, most importantly, the bedsheets are cleaned and changed regularly. I have heard complaints about the toilets being dirty but when I was there, toilets were cleaned 2 times daily. I guess it was careless use of the toilets by people rather than failure to clean up. There is free internet access, hot showers and a simple but complete breakfast. A plus point is the location of the hostel, just 5 minutes walk from the main train station and many sights of interest are within walkable distance (about 10 mins). I will without doubt stay in Freestyle again if I go back to Rome as Kumar has become my friend within a few days, just like he did with so many other people. (I know this because I helped him reply to the numerous emails from people who used to stay at the hostel wishing Kumar a Happy New Year.)

This hostel is small with clean rooms and chill staff. Some ads say that it has breakfast though it does not. However there is a kitchen that all are free to use at nearly all times. It's in a pretty central location and about 5 blocks from a major grocery store and 3 from an open air market where one can buy anything from leather boots to cabbages.

I think the booking problem must have been solved since neither I nor anyone I met there seemed to have had a problem with their internet booking not going through. It's a restful and quiet place to stay and I would recommend it if you are in need of a bit of kick back time. The room I was in was like the sleep vortex. :)

Location... one block East, we saw a group of 3 shooting up at 3 in the afternoon and one block West, we saw a group of Transvestite hookers each night. Next door, there are a group of people who spend the majority of the night hanging out on the sidewalk talking very loud. They jam 12 beds in rooms which should have no more than 10. And there are not enough lockers for each possible person in the room. Oh, and their "breakfast" is a cup of juice and one donut. And my final complaint, only two available showers for an upwards of 40 or more customers.

Beware! Book over the internet with this hostel with great caution! They take bookings over the internet, but the "main hostel", wherever that is, does not always pass the reservation information to the hostel. Our arrival was a surprise and unexpected despite our booking. Thankfully the beds were not all taken, otherwise, they would have pulled the spare mattresses out from beneath the beds for us.

When we stayed there, the guy who worked there was an absolute junkee, at the moment he was in rehab, so if you're interested in methadon stories ... . And there were all sort of other weird guys that definitely weren't backpackers. If you don't have a problem with this kind of atmosphere ... . The hostel itself is not the worst you can have, but it's not much better. It's very small and the bathrooms tend to get extremely dirty in no time, because there are only two for the entire hostel.
