This was the best place to stay at- very friendly staff who spoke english brilliantly, rooms (even ones without bathrooms) had a sink and mirror so you could brush your teeth. Big lockers in the rooms and NO BUNK BEDS! It had a fabulous location, clean bathrooms, but I think the best thing was the homey atmosphere- the living room with lounges and a tv with videos (including all the fawlty towers videos)- plus the kitchen where we all sat at night drinking vino and making friends and talking about our travels- I knew no-one when I arrived here but had heaps of friends when I left. Definitely make a reservation.

Close to train station for late arrivals and easy departures to other cities for day trips. For those who like to walk I easily walked the entire city in one day seeing all the main sites without back-tracking and ending back at the hostel.

This is a magnificent hostel. The common room was lively and friendly, and usually going strong when it was closed up at midnight. The Fawlty Towers videos are a nice touch. One of the best parts - no smoking in the common room made it so much more welcoming.

Dorms with four in a room were clean and well kept. If only the midnight common room closure could be pushed back (although strangely there´s no actual curfew) this place would be sublime.

This is a very popular hostel, and there are a few good reasons -- it is quite clean, the kitchen is good, and the outdoor terrace and adjoining TV room are nice places to relax.

But unfortunately, the whole FT operation strikes me as a bit of a "bait and switch" scam. There are very few dorm beds at Fawlty Towers, and they take no reservations for dorm beds. They use this to their advantage -- as the place fills early, the FT staff uses its popularity to book other affiliated hostels in town, collecting deposits for those other hostels. Judging from what I saw, I would guess that they collect far more in deposits for other hostels than they do in actually selling beds in their own hostel.

Therein lies the problem -- whereas the FT facility is good, its other affiliated hostels are overcrowded and dirty. In effect, FT uses its reputation as a good hostel to refer most of its prospective guests to dodgy hostels which many travelers otherwise avoid -- people see the conditions at FT, and assume that they will be as good elsewhere, when they decidely are not. For those who returned to FT to complain (I saw a couple of these), the staff was decidedly not bothered to help them, and offered no refunds or apologies.

Also, FT has a 9AM checkout, which is earlier than is typical in most private hostels, and requires that you pay for your bed by the evening before checkout; that's also an unusual policy, and obviously done to maximize profits. Given how they routinely send so many backpackers to some of Rome's worst hostels, I would give them and any other affiliate of Enjoy Rome a miss.

Just returned from a fab week in Rome. Fawlty Towers was FANTASTIC. Reserved my room only for the first three nights, so had to leave - my bad luck. Had a great time on the roof terrace, meeting other travellers from all over the world. They also have free internet and a kitchen. Extremely helpful and cool staff.
