I spent two nights here in the off peak season. An enjoyable place to stay. The bedrooms and bathrooms were very clean and presentable. The staff were very helpful and provided good advice about sightseeing. They also sold bus tickets and provided useful public transport information. It's in a quiet and peaceful area, and not too far out with a 20min (EUR0.70) bus ride to Alghero. There were only two downsides. Firstly, the included breakfast was not really worth bothering with - one tiny bread roll, some jam and a coffee. Barely a snack.Secondly, there are a lot of stray dogs in the area. One huge and very threatening dog patrols around the hostel. Each time I walked in or out of the hostel, he'd follow me around for a block, growling very nastily, as though ready to bite my leg off. I'm still bi-legged, but it was a very scary experience each time.Overall though, a clean, cheap and friendly place to stay. Just watch the dogs. :)

We stayed in a private double room in January 2004, which is very much off-season and relaxing. The hostel is situated in Fertilia, 6km from Alghero and 4 km from the airport (with very cheap Ryanair connections to Frankfurt and London) Fertilia is a very nice place to stay with cosy restaurants and very friendly people. A public bus to Alghero runs every 60 minutes. The hostel is new and consists of several modern bungalows. The rooms are well sized and very clean. The equipment is simple, but functional and worked properly. The staff is helpful and friendly. Their English is not the best, but they try the best. Only the green between the building could be a little more trimmed. I can really recommend the place to stay.

We stayed at Hostal de l' Alguer in October 2002 and we are returning October 2003. This time we should be able take a bus to Fertilia as we arrive in the morning. A late night taxi was about 18 euro compared to the bus about 50 cents each.Hostal de l'Alguer is an excellent base from which to explore the local area. The staff were friendly and helpful (I find it hard to believe what the Aussie & Kiwi said, large pinch of salt needed methinks). Mario at reception went out of his way to help me out on the phone. The room was very clean and new and there's no noisy traffic. Prima colazione (breakfast) was coffee rolls and jam.The dining area was light and clean. You can book lunch or evening meal with Mama Margherita, and there is a lounge-bar which has all the usual wine & beer at reasonable cost. I believe that there is an arrangement between the hostel and a local restaurant which offers discount to hostellers. There's lots of useful info at reception about the area. Scuba diving is good ( Michele 338/1852663 or blueservices@tiscalinet.it. Easy to find on the beach on the way to Alghero). There are excellent walks and cycling around Porte Conte, and good shopping and cafes in Alghero.

This hostel is really good. Went in Feb 2003 with 2 adults & 11 month baby, really friendly staff, good room with ensuite bathroom. We had hoped a cot would be available but the staff improvised and provided a spare bed, extra bedding plus lots of boiling water when requested. When I couldn't work out how to switch on the washing machine they were really helpful and given my limited Italian they were very patient! We were involved in a car accident at the end of the holiday and without the staff's assistance we would have missed our flight. The hostel is new and clean, a little bare because of it, don't expect old building character but DO expect fantastic food and good prices; courtesy of Margherita. Overall good facilities and a first class base to explore the island - we highly recommend it. Not sure if we were at the same hostel as the NZ and Aus contributors! Regardless of your ability, have a go at speaking Italian as this is Italy and people will respect your effort and help you!

This place is GREAT! the staff ARE friendly and none of whome I recall smelling of cheese! The food is excellent value if you're on a budget (obviously its not haute cuisine but what do you expect for 8 euros?). If you're up for chatting to the locals and getting into the Sardinian swing of things this is a great place. The only fault i have is that the showers can sometimes be a little unpredicatable.

The worst hostel I have ever stayed at. Still, it is HI, so I shouldn't have been surprised. Grumpy staff, expensive (for Sardinia) beds, institutional surroundings. We stayed in far nicer places on the east coast for less money. Don't bother with this place... sleep at the airport instead.

The perfect kicking off point when you've just winged it in from Stansted. The hostel is at Fertilia, where the airport road first hits the sea. Margherita will look after you like one of the family, supper at 8 just not to be missed. The hostel will put you in touch with the Sardegne car rental boys, can sort you a bike or give you the bus info you need. There are a series of good, out of season, beaches & coves on the run round to Cappo Cachia, there are some fine cliff walks and Neptunes Grotto is as good as the hype with the staircase a must. Alghero is an hours walk down the beach or a regular bus ride away. The old town wall is the must do walkand the veg in the market hall a real treat. Fertilia itself is fine as a base - SISA co-op store with veg man outside, baker, cafes, restaurants & pizza joints. But the best bit is Margherita's hostel & her kitchen - eat it up local cooking. The design of the new hostel, pavilions of 4x4 bedrooms, almost guarantees that you won't be over run by the rest of the world & if you've got an 8 year old boy he'll love the pool table. So when Ryanair let you down with your flight home just ring 932039 tell them your on your way and have an extra night, you weren't that fussed about going home, were you.

This hostel is fantastico! The public transport to Fertilia probably doesn't run often enough if you want to go exploring but you can travel to Alghero by bus but be warned they stop at 10pm. Next time i'm hiring a moped as the roads are fairly quiet. The hostel is extremely clean, the people that work there are really friendly and willing to help you learn italian (a must in Sardinia as very few english speaking people seem to visit) and the food is well worth it at only 8 euros for a 2 course meal. The bar is pretty cheap too thumbs up for the house red! There are a few beaches nearby you can reach on foot that are clean and sandy or you can hire a bike for only 7 euros for a day. If you want to relax and soak up the local ambiance go there it's great. I'm going back very soon!
