I first stayed when it had been willed to an Ethiopian professor by the descendants of Paul V, who were the original owners of the palazzo: it was dank, with distinctly odorous bathrooms that were unpleasant in the extreme to use. The kitchen was about as appealing as a locker room; clearly, it required rennovation and vision to achieve what has been sistained for the last ten years or so: a hostel that serves multiple functions for international travellers and students: a gathring place for sharing wine and food on the terrace with its hynotic views of the Umbrian hills and skyline of the city; an ecumenical center (the current owner is a priest who has been active in the ecumenical movement for years; he is joined with Protestant and Orthodox peers for shared exchanges), a theological library (Nouwen, von Balthasar and Congar in various languages are found here -- no fluff and only a handful of page turners; in other words -- legitimate and worthwhile material); and a hostel that has served a variety of people, many of whom return annually, by way of necessity or the various festivals in town. To be fair, the blankets tend to retain odor and the kitchen could provide more comfortable seating. The coffee from the machine is predictably awful, but these are quibbles. It is a safe place and there are no street people hanging out eyeballing women as thought they were available. If a woman were accosted for sexual relations, she would only have to report to the Director, who is in constant touch with the Carabinieri, who will cheerfully see to it the offending party contemplate the benefits of an evening in the playroom of the local galera (jail). Drinking is controlled; wine over take-away from the local pizzeria (Mediteraneo) is best savored on the balcony: the summer evenings that last until 10.30 or so, when the sun sets, are best. The curfew is a problem only for the pub-addled; if you need to be disrespectful -- drunk and rowdy -- well, then you don´t belong in Perugia -- or in Italy for that matter. And if you find the bus ride down the hill lovely, the charms of the area near the station are yours for the asking and the hostel there will fill the bill correspondingly. The hostel is a good base for those looking for apartments in the area (mostly foreign-language students at the University for Foreigners); it should not be construed as a long-term solution to short-supply housing. There is a language and conversation group that offers participants an opportunity to meet local people and references to local physicians and counselors can be had by asking the Director, who is a very gifted and sensible person whose concern for young people is part of what makes the hostel succesful. It helps to make one appreciate more the gift of a stay here, something that should certainly be viewed in a light that is different than any kind of party hostel. Perugia is one hour, twenty six minuted from Rome by train and makes an ideal base for entering or leaving the country. One might plan a day trip to Rome using Perugia as a base: one will be happy to return, dead tired, to the hostel (following normal hours -- if there is an unexpected delay, one might call the reception en route to the hostel on the train -- check first to see if they will open under those circumstances).

Met some nice people here and the common areas were great to hang out. The place is clean and I even had a lovely view from the room I was staying in. I can, however, never fully endorse a hostel that has a lock-out and curfew.

After looking at the website i decided to try this backpackers because Perugia had been highly recommended. While the pics on their website certainly blow smoke up their arse, it is a beautiful building and the rooms are very comfortable. As others have also said, this easily takes the title of best backpacker bathrooms in Europe!!Watch out you dont stay on the bus for too long also, as it will involve a lot of hill walking and stair climbing to work out where the backpackers is!! It doesnt help when the Lonely Planet map is slightly incorrect...use the one on the website instead. And its easy if you get off at piazza Italia-the one with the statue of a guy on a horse.Also, be warned it is fricken freezing Mr Bigglesworth in winter-i arrived at 7 pm, got lost and walked around in -5deg temperatures with a belting wind because its on a hill!Also, i was in bed and the male attendant came up and let himself into my room and started talking to me. Kinda wierd!Overall though, its so close to everything-pizzeria meditteraneo (it think its called) is superb and 40 metres away-its spotless, the female staff member was great and its REALLY CHEAP! If it had a better common room it would have got 5 stars. Second best ive stayed at in Europe behind Globetrotters in London! Enjoy!

...attention than what it usually gets. To begin with, a few words about Perugia: It's tiny, but in a fun way. There are two universities there, and its being tiny means that all the students go out, every single night of the week, to the same place: the main Piazza. Conveniently enough, this Piazza is located 40 meters or so from the hostel's front door. Except for that, and the spectacular view, Perugia is well connected by train to other towns in the area. Go visit Assisi, Cortona and Gubbio while staying in this INCREDIBLY CHEAP hostel.Pros:1. Cheap. I'll say that again: Cheap. 12 a night is cheap.2. As pointed out, well located.3. Although the common area may look a little dodgy, the bedrooms and showers were renovated sometime in the last 7 years, so it's pretty good.4. Excellent kitchen.Cons:The only two reasons for which this place doesn't deserve a fifth star are:1. An early curfew in a party town. No point in going to a club before 1am. You can still hang out with the locals in the piazza till then.2. Not enough socialization space. You kinda need to force yourself to meet new people.Note that the location as indicated on the map in Lonley Planet's Italy guide is inaccurate. Just keep walking further into Via Bontempi and look for it on your right handside.

I'd agree with all the technical details in the very positive review posted here, and add that the views from the terrace are wonderful, but the problem here is with the staff and ambience.There is something not quite right about this place - and its my second trip to stay at it in four years, so I'm not mistaken. There are quite a lot of single men who seem to be either living in hostel or hanging out in hope of picking up tourist women.I don't appreciate having a chorus of eyes following me every time I walk through the tv room to kitchen. A girl in my room told me that one one of the men tried to pick her up as she cooked her dinner (!!) and was trying to get her to come back to his house. So he wasn't a traveller at all.sleazy is a word that comes to mind. the owners would be well advised to tell their male friends to rack off or stop being so predatory - i certainly did. I won't stay here again, as two more hostels have opened on edge of town and the bus ride down the hill is lovely.

About Perugia: Perugia is south of Florence (Firenze). By train it will take about 3 hours to get there from Florence. This is because Trenitalia sucks.Perugia is a hilly, midieval city veeeery lovely and veeeery worth the trip!! It's nicer than the tourist crowds and the high prices of Florence... and more original for that matter. Perugia is also a nice place to shop, there are cheap places to eat, there are enough supermarkets and at night there is also plenty of things to do.How to get there: Perugia is not what you see when you walk out of the railway station. You have to take the bus to the actual city. The bus stop is directly in front of the station. You should take the busses from that station side of the street (so don't cross the street). The bus takes about 10 minutes and costs 80 eurocents.Hostel location: The hostel is in the middle of the city centre, nearby the big square. Ideal location.Building: Wow!! This is a nice building!! There are wall paintings everywhere combined with a modern interiour! Very classy!Rooms: Large, modern, clean(!), good beds and a large table in the middle of the room.Bathrooms: Soooo modern and sooooo clean!!!! The bathrooms must have really cost them a fortune. Wow!Kitchen: Not many hostels have kitchens, so I was happy!! This kitchen is large, well supplied and has a fridge!! Finally cold drinks!!TV-room/Internet: Yes, they have a tv-room with good sofa's and a coffee table! Only Italian tv so that's too bad, but you can hang on the sofa's just as well. They also have internet here and a coffee machine.Curfew: This is the only sucky thing about this hostel, they have a curfew and a lock-out during the day. I believe the curfew was 1.00, but I can't be sure. Personel: really friendly!Conclusion: I really don't like curfews, but this hostel was soooo nice and beautiful that I still give it the full 5 stars.Perugia was also really worth it!
