Good hostel, but no other backpackers, June 8, 2007
Reviewer: akerman from Sweden

Pros: Location, small ensuite dorms, fridge and satellite TV in room.
Cons: All other guests are students of English, no other backpackers, no staff present.

Firstly, I would like to recommend Malta to other backpackers. I can't understand why I seemed to be the only one. Malta is ideal - low cost level and lots to see and do.

Balco Harmony is in a very good location, close to The Strand in Sliema. Not that there's anything to see in Sliema, but it's an excellent base for exploring the island and surrounding islands. Each dorm room has an ensuite bathroom, fridge and satellite TV. In the basement, there is a fully equipped kitchen and a satellite TV with a DVD player. Oddly enough, Malta does, however, seem to be deprived of any other grocery shops than small corner shops with a limited selection.

When I was staying, all of the other guests were English language students (mostly Turkish) who were staying for months. Naturally, their days look very different from a backpacker's and I mostly ended up touring the island on my own. Considering these guests don't have the need of an ever present receptionist, the reception is only staffed very rarely (never during my visit). You rather call the owners (free phone call) if you need their laundry service etc. (although the laundry machine was broken when I was there and I ended up having to go elsewhere).
