BUG review
For many years the 130-year-old building, that is now home to Cocomama, was the famous brothel “Yab Yum”, and then it was the party pad for an ex-porn star before undergoing a thorough renovation and opening as a wonderful hostel in late 2010. The hostel’s common areas include a lounge with a big TV, comfortable sofas and lots of board games; a kitchen with lots of pots and pans, sharp knives, fresh herbs and a better than average free food shelf, but there’s no oven so you can’t cook a roast or a pizza (although it is still the best hostel kitchen in Amsterdam). There are also two Macs with free internet access plus free wireless internet. If you find Grandma’s Ashes in the lounge, you can head for the hostel’s backyard for a smoke (there is no smoking inside). Accommodation is in clean dormitories (each themed on a different aspect of Dutch culture) with comfortable beds with en suite bathrooms. The friendly owners, Lotje and Anika, take the time to tell you all about the city and answer all your Amsterdam questions, and there is Joop the friendly hostel cat to keep you company when they’re not around. It’s not often that a hostel gets it right, but Cocomama ticks all the boxes with nice clean rooms, nice bathrooms and brand new furnishings plus a cosy common room and a gezellige atmosphere. Cocomama is definitely the top choice in Amsterdam.
