BUG review
White Tulip is an Irish pub with dorms upstairs. The building is small, old, and a bit stuffy, with dirty rooms that smell pungently of various kinds of smoke. They are relatively large, but dull and cluttered. The bathrooms are not much cleaner, but showers are hot and reliable. Located next to Durty Nelly’s on the Warmoesstraat, many rooms have a nice view of the Oudekerk and the street behind. Reception staff are young, happy, and sociable. Internet is free.

the location was great.. the food downstairs was really good and really cheap!! even though we were a group of 5, we made so many friends from the hostel and stuck together throughout the trip. The communal showers and toilets werent as bad as i though they would be!! specially when all these random hot, guys walk out half naked in the morning.

This Hostel had all the amenities a successful hostel should have - clean bathrooms, spacious rooms, adequate extra furniture, good sound isolation from room to room, and adequate room locks, but the bedding was sketchy - often other guests did not have clean bedding and some of the lockers did not shut well. The building was old, with the general problem of narrow stairways and sagging floors. The doors to the rooms had combination locks, in my opinion they were not changed often enough. People could switch rooms mid-stay and retain access to both. This is just asking for theivery. This hostel would do well to get better furniture, an on-site laundry service (for them, not the guests) and pay more attention to guest move-in/out scheduling.Although, I did feel very safe there and never once feared for myself or my belongings (I had a good locker). An excellent choice if you want to be in the center of the Redlight and save some cash - but if you're traveling alone, I'd stay elsewhere.

was one of the best hostel experiences I've ever had. I'd highly recommend this to anyone travelling to Amsterdam. Some details:LOCATION: In the red light district. Above a bar (4-5pm and 8-9pm happy hour) and right next to anything and everything the red light district has to offer. Nice short walk to the Centraal Station. The street outside can get someone loud but nothing that an active day, and extreme tiredness can't fix. The local church gets really annoying really quickly but that's a product of the city planning and affects most hostels.CLEANLINESS: Beds were cleaned prior to arrival. Other people had to wait a little bit before the cleaner people showed up. Room was occassionally cleaned.FACILITIES: This hostel does not have a kitchen nor a fridge. The tiled bathroom is beautiful though. Sparkling clean with 4 individual showers on each floor, 4 urinals, and 4 sinks with mirrors. All that you can ask for.ROOMS: 4-5 bunk beds in each room with a table and a few chairs in the middle. Average. Nothing bad at all.LOCKERS: 6 tall, 7 foot lockers in each room. Our room had 4 of the 6 lockers working. Key locks were available for rent.SECURITY: This is probably the most important reason to pick this hostel. In order to get in you first have to ring a doorbell. Then you have to go inside and present a validated card that the hostel gives to you. Upon validation that the card is legit, you are buzzed upstairs. The room to your beds is electronically locked and needs a 6 number combination to unlock. All this coupled with the lockers makes it completely safe from random people.Oh, and random note. DO NOT eat the breakfast downstairs at the bar. Although the cheap (3.50 euro) price might be tempting, be prepared to wait anywhere from 15-60 minutes for 3 slices of ham, 3 slices of cheese, a slice of cantelope, and an egg on occassion. Not worth it. The 25% discount is for breakfast only; not for drinks.

The white tulip is not a bad hostel. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to stay in the heart of the red light district. The staff was very nice and helpful. We stayed in a 10 bed dorm, the room was very clean and the sheets looked washed and clean. the bathrooms have just been re-done and are very nice with ample privacy. The security is very good, the doors have locks and you get a locker and lock. Plus you have to be buzzed through two doors just to get into the hostel. The only thing off-putting about the hostel is that anyone can stay there, no matter age or craziness. We had a couple of burnouts in our room that at times made the stay a little uncomfortable. The noise is also a factor, people can come in and out at any time during the night so you don't get a ton of sleep. Plus you are right in the red light district so you have some street noise. But you will be drunk or high anyway so it won't really matter. If you are coming for a good time and meeting some...interesting people the white tulip is for you. Oh yeah there is no TV except in the pub downstairs.

this hostel was in quite a good area to be close to all the coffee shops and our room was right above the red lights you could almost touch them as you opened the window. the rooms were dirty and extremely basic the beds were like metal hammocks and when i woke in the morning my whole arm was throbbing with bites from bed bugs and it hurt for about a week. my friend and i got a 5 bed dorm with 2 travellers we met on the plane over but at about 3am they put another person in with us and woke us up the man who they put in with us looked dodgy spoke little english said he was a jeweler and had no luggage it was a bit worrying as you like to meet the people you are going to be sleeping in a room with before you sleep there. i would not stay here again but if you don't mind slumming it, being bitten, dirt, bugs and totaly dirty unprivate showers stay here

Please ! don't even try to sleep in this hostel ! too expensive and probably the WORST HOSTEL in the world ! unfriendly staff ... For the same price you can, for exemple, try to get accomodated on a barge ( house boat ) not too far from the Warmoestraat ... I 'm used to travel a lot, but this is the worst place I found !

I ended up staying at the White Tulip out of sheer desperation - we had booked 3 nights at the YHA hostel but our reservation fell through the last night, thus leaving us in a situation of little choice!! The White Tulip was pretty much the ONLY hostel in Amsterdam that had availability (not surprising). Upon arrival, I was disappointed with the staff at the front desk. The area to check in is exceptionally cramped (we had to have some people wait on the street) and the man at the desk was not very welcoming, but businesslike. Although the location is good, right in the heart of the redlight district, the beds are located on the 2nd floor. It is VERY noisy - we listened to several men vomiting outside our window - and you hear everything. The noise doesn't stop, this is Amsterdam! Also, there are literally prostititues right below the hostel, across the street, etc so the red light glow literally floods your room...Now, let me address the WORST part of this hostel - the cleanliness. Honestly, it looks like a trash dump. I slept in full clothes and not under the sheets, because they really looked like someone had just rolled out of the bed 5 minutes before I checked in. The dorms just plain smelled - a fan or some type of circulation would have been helpful - but alas, if you open the window, you get to listen to vomiting and people trying to solicit prostitutes! The dorm style rooms here are the sketchiest things ever - there are beaten up lockers (they do give you locks, thankfully), broken tables and chairs in the center of the room, and beer cans and bottles everywhere. We were scared. Not to mention the fact that random people kept coming into our room all night long, so the door lock obviously didn't work, or everyone knew the code to get in!The bathrooms were so terrible. I avoided them as much as humanly possible - I wasn't a fan of the co-ed bathrooms, I really didn't feel comfortable. They are open (everyone can see you in the stalls) and to say "dirty" is an understatement. I used bathrooms in restaurants instead! As for showering, abandon all hope now. This hostel is surprisingly expensive for what you get. My best advice to you is BOOK AHEAD and confirm reservations - Amsterdam is one of the most difficult places to find accomodation so it is imperative to plan in advance. Please, heed my warning and stay elsewhere! I have travelled all across Europe and stayted in countless hostels, and this has been by far the most abomidable experience ever.

Great location- close to dam square & centraal station & there's a great buzz on the street . the dorms were pretty big and clean. The bathrooms weren't great but they were clean. Its pretty expensive @ 30euros a night but that seems to be the going rate over there. There's also a couple of cute barmen downstairs!

The white tulip is great for a big bunch of lads, right near all the coffee houses in the red light area just make sure if you see the bar maids in the irish bar downstairs you don't bother buying them drinks just be blunt with them and ask them for a s***.
