BUG Review
This place has a deservedly bad reputation for uncleanliness. It is in a huge building south of the centre, full of backpackers who have read the bad reviews but dare to descend into its halls anyway. The reception are a bit unfriendly, but you are sure to meet some interesting characters in the huge bar and restaurant area. The halls and rooms are painted with psychedelic colors and bright graffiti, and are pretty run down and dirty. The downstairs bar is at the end of a long hallway of black walls with scratched carvings, making it feel like you are entering a dungeon. The bar has free internet and big screen televisions where they have sports nights, as well as a huge glass dance cage in the middle of the room. It is not hard to imagine some pretty wild nights have passed within the walls. Don’t come here for great comfort or amenities.

I'm not fussy about my hostels - I like a clean bed, a lock on my door and a bar to drink in if possible. This place was disgusting. I stayed in what can only be described as a broom cupboard packed solid with 3 bunk beds. The staff were awful - someone else I met claimed they arrived to find blood on their sheets at then a drunk and abusive staff member was sent to clear it up when they complained. Reception staff were rude to other people - a sarcastic "good luck" was all they got when other guests threatened to go someplace else. It seems they rely on the pure volume of people needing a bed for the night, rather than by providing any sort of good service. The hostel had about 400 beds - most of which were apparently occupied by stag dos and school trips judging by the amount of shouting and running up and down the corridors all night.

The only redeeming feature was the 2 for 1 beers in the bar but not even that was worth staying for!

i've stayed in some pretty bad hostels but at least they were quirky and funny, if things are funny its all okay and part of the experience. unfortunately, this is a large hostel that looks like a converted community center. its institutional, lacks color and atmosphere. when its busy its the closest thing to being in a minimum security prison. crowds of angst ridden people being "processed" by staff who behave like overworked government employees. we used to get back to the hostel five minutes before falling asleep and never hung out there for more than 60 seconds, i checked out the whole place and sized it up quickly, the bar/lounge was depressing and look on the blank faces of staff and backpackers said it all! rooms where okay, clean but depressing, windows high by the ceiling like a prison. location was good, but amsterdam is small anyway. i never stuck around long enough to get the "free" breakfast. pay the extra 4 euros and stay somewhere that'll put a smile on your face.

bye

We stayed at the Hans Brinker twice with a couple of months between stays. The first time was an awful experience, excessive noise and dirty facilities and bedding the main problems. However this was in peak season and the hostel was packed. Eternal waits at check in/out and you can't prebook. Still, the hostel is in a great location and given that it is a busabout dropoff/pickup point also was handy.

Staff were friendly, but too few of them and the free breakfast was good though light and bar had very cheap drinks. On our return visit a couple of months later the Brinker was not as busy (though still bustling) and the rooms, bedding and showers were spotlessly clean and the stay was one of the best we had of any Hostel in Europe. I would highly recommend that you get an upper level floor to reduce noise and not go during the peak season and you should enjoy your stay at this hostel. Otherwise, pay more and look elsewhere.

I stayed here for 4 nights at the end of August 2004. It was fine for me as I spent most of my time enjoying the city of Amsterdam. I just needed a cheap, clean, secure place to sleep. This fit the bill perfectly. I was surprised to find a clean bath towel along with my bed linens, a bathroom inside of my dorm room, and a small but free breakfast. This is in a good location and I had no problems being a single female. It's not the Hilton, but I would recommend it to any budget traveler.

We stayed at the Hans Brinker even though we had read the reviews on the net. We were pleasantly surprise, its in a great location and had a great social area to party with cheap drinks. The dorm was was in good condition and cleaned everyday. Most of the staff were friendly except one or two looke like they would rather be somewhere else. All in all though I recommend staying there

I wasn't expecting the Ritz, but I wasn't expecting this either. Let's just say my friend and had trouble falling asleep one night due to mosquitos, and then we awoke the next morning to find red spots all over our hands and feet - some on the face too. Hopefully there was no lice but I'm taking precautions. So there you have it folks -- bedbugs. That's not clean and it's certainly not worth 21 euros a night either. The staff was friendly, and the place was noisy. The location was good but the fact remains that I'm sanitizing all of my clothes and my backpack because I don't know what I've picked up from my stay at the Hans Brinker. Beware and good luck.

We stayed at the Brinker mid-January of 2004. After having read some of the reviews on other sites I was more than a little apprehensive. We had a double private room and were delighted and relieved to find it clean and comfortable. We had room 420, on the fourth floor of course. Very small room, bathroom and lockers. The staff could have been more frienldy, but, as an Amercian backpacker in my mid-twenties I certainly encountered less helpful hotel staff during my two week travels. We found the location to be fine as Amsterdam is a very small city...quite easily managed on foot. 20 minute walk to the Anne Frank House, 10 minute walk to the museums. There is a bar/restaurant on the first floor, decent, free breakfast and cheap beers in the evenings. The club in the basement seemed to be abandoned other than my traveling companion and the five british guys that were staying across the hall from us. The free internet service in the basement club was very helpful although we had to wait a few minutes for a machine. We ran into no noise issue, although, by the time we fell asleep I doubt we would have heard a tain going through our room. I have stayed at many hostels throughout Europe and am a memeber of YHI and I can honestly say that this was one of the more pleasant experiences I had. True, it is large but was not full when we visited so it did not pose a problem. I would certainly recommend this to any budget-minded traveler with reasonable expectations for a clean place to stay. When I return to Amsterdam I will have no qualms about staying at the Brinker. A few words to the wise...don't be late for check out as the staff will get a little unruley, bring luggage locks as your packs will not fit in the lockers and treat the staff will a little patience and respect and you will find yourself downing beers with them in the bar until the wee hours of the morning. :O) Enjoy your travels...

This is probably the worst hostel I have ever stayed in! I'm usually not too fussy about the hostels I stay in - just need a place to crash for the night - but the Hans Brinker was disgusting.

The place smelled of vomit, the shower water was brown and smelly, the windows didn't open and the air con didn't work! There were six of us crammed into a tiny room with bunk beds that were squeaky and ready to collapse. I ended up with bruises all over my legs from climbing up to the top bunk as there was no ladder.

The lockers are too small for most packs and can be picked with a paper clip. I found the place really noisy - both from outside noise and constant door-slamming and partying in the rooms. The only good thing about this hostel is the location...

This hostel is really huge and crowded, but we had a private room and facilities which made it bearable. It was clean, though a bit cramped, and the lockers weren't big enough to hold our backpacks. The breakfast was just bread and jams, but you could buy whatever else you wanted, they also served cheap food during the day. However, the staff was rude and cynical, which is a big downside, and the common room doesn't even open until the late evening. Not a very central location, but safe anyway. An okay place (only to sleep at) for a reasonable price.

much better than we expected after reviews we had read. Not too noisy. beds narrow - no guard rails - but comfortable. food cheap and quite tasty. floors mopped daily. could not open windows as they were bolted shut!
