I stayed for one night only, so perhaps my experience is not typical. I found the hostel easy to get to. The hostel is located beside a lovely park. It is very quiet and peaceful and feels like a rural location, but very easy to reach Amsterdam from there. I was in a comfortable four bed female dorm with private bathroom. The staff were very nice and friendly and great to chat to. The breakfast buffet was very nice and extensive. However, although the hostel has a quiet hours policy, on my corridor were a large group of football fans who yelled in the corridor and ran in and out of each others rooms for most of the night. I know that might not be the case every night and perhaps I was just unlucky that night. At breakfast, I found it was mostly groups and almost all tables were reserved for specific groups. It was not a good place to meet people if your travelling alone as I was - I felt like a spare part at times as I was alone. Again, that might just have been that night.

I've stayed in this hostel 3 times over 5 years, and I like it a lot. Rooms are cleaned daily and in good condition, you BYO or hire linen and they have nice doonas in cleaned covers on the bunks. Rooms have 2, 4, 6, or 8 beds, each room has its own toilet and shower. The staff are very friendly, it is a short 10 min strool from Zaandpoort-Suid (I think) station or 10 mins on the #2 (or is it 4?) bus from Haarlem station - drivers happily point it out to you. They do a good big breakfast (included, and you can easily make an extra sandwich to take away for lunch) and dinners are good and well priced. There is a nice bar, and I've never found it a "party" hostel, more a "few drinks" place. It CAN be noisy if the French schoolkids are in residence but that's life.Whenever I am in Amsetrdam I stay here, much much nicer than the seedy hostels in Amsterdam city, and Haarlem is only 10 mins away by train and it is like a mini-Amsterdam (but cleaner!) itself.Recommended.

I stayed here for 4 nights in Sept 2003, and while the hostel is a little out of town, it'slocation make for a relaxing time. The fact that you are no more than 15 minutes by train from the sea at Zandvoort and 30 mins from Amsterdam make it the perfect place to have the best of both worlds. The staff are great as is the bar area.

I spent three weeks in the Herberg Haarlem two years ago .It was then a very friendly place .There is apark near and a local cheap super market .At the time a bed in a dorm was thirty guilders which include a buffet breakfast which was more than adquate.I am not giving more that three stars because I have not been there for over two years. Also one of the staff is a mad Everton football club supporte so do not say you support liverpool football club.

I stayed here for 1 night. To the credit of the hostel, this is the only hostel that give me a place when I unexpectedly found myself stuck for accommodation at short notice. I stayed in a four bedded female dorm. The room had its own shower and toilet. Bedding is provided. The hostel has a bar and internet access. Breakfast is an extensive breakfast buffet. The staff are mainly young and international, and very friendly. One of the things I liked about the hostel was that there was a very mixed age range and nationality mix. The surroundings were lovely. There is an extensive area of parkland just outside the back of the hostel, and the canal runs alongside. Shops are about 10 minutes walk along the canal. Hint- the cheapest is the service station for food and gifts, and that is open the longest hours. The hostel is a long way out of Haarlem. Bus number 2 from Centraal Station stops directly outside. This is a good place to come if your suffering form sightseeing fatigue and you just want to chill out for a time. The remote location is also the hostels major downfall however. No-one goes out at night, except for the hostels bar, and it does get very noisy. Notices ask guests to be quiet in the dormitories after 10pm to respect guests who wish to sleep, but it is not a quiet place. Perhaps I am just biased though as the night I was there, a group of British football fans were staying on the same corridor, and they yelled and banged doors all night long. If I was returnig to the Netherlands, this would not be one of my first choices to stay at again, but if you like to party and don't mind a noisy dorm, you would like this better.
