My 23-yr old son and I stayed here 2 nights in August 2006. We had a room to ourselves with a bunk bed unit that had a single on top and a double on the bottom. The beds were very comfortable, and we even had a nice view of the beach out our window. Quiet location. It was cold, rainy and windy when we were there, and we were grateful there was no lock-out because it was nice to be able to come in during the middle of the day if we wanted. We had a car, and this location was good for making day trips to Bushmill's distillery, the Giant's Causeway and other interesting places. Staff were friendly but not around much. Breakfast included the usual -- cereal, toast, tea or coffee. There was a lounge and TV, a table for card or board games, bookcase with lots of books. Reasonable price, reasonable but not outstanding accommodation.

We stayed at this hostel in May '06 and it was absolutely filthy. We could feel the bedsprings poking us through the mattress, the kitchen was unsanitary and the plumbing didn't work.....think a house full of people not being able to flush the toilet.

This was the worst hostel we stayed in out of many across Ireland. Save your money and stay somewhere esle.

we stayed at macools in july 2005 for 2 nights. we found that the facilities were more than adequate (shower was nice, kitchen fairly large, breakfast included, lounge area welcoming). met a couple of great people there, drank too much red wine (apologies), and used it as a base for exploring the giant's causeway and carrick-a-rede rope bridge areas. the owners/managers were friendly and helpful. the only downside was the very crowded dorm.
