This is a very, very solid hostel. The facilities are perfectly fine, there is certainly nothing run down about them. It's in a central location, unfortunately far away from the bus station, but very fortunately close to the numerous watering holes and other nightlife. Trust me, you want to be staying near the bars on 1 Euro beer night (and just about every other night). I really dug the vibe at the hostel too: there's a courtyard area where there are always people lounging around, drinking beer and chatting. This is the best HI Hostel that I encountered in Europe.

This hostel has a great location just minutes from the beach. It's clean. It has an amazing courtyard for just chillin out, eating, drinking or even sleeping.... there are hammocks. Clean rooms, a little on the small side but decent. Staff is really cool and friendly....good sense of humour. If there's one flaw, it's showers. Hot water is patchy, but the rest of the place makes up for it. Overall one of the best hostels I stayed at in Europe.

lagos was awesome! we arrived in april of 2003 and only expected to stay about 3 nights. we stayed a total of 10 nights. our rooms were always cleaned, the staff were great, the showers were great, the kitchen was awesome and we got to watch the simpsons in english! i met so may awesome people from all over the world. we would go to the amazing beaches during the day, play our drinking games in the evening and then go bar hopping at night. we went sufing one day and got our asses kicked by the waves but had a blast doing it. i would and have definitly recomend lagos to everyone i know that is planning a backpacking trip to europe. i intend on returning to lagos sometime again. i love lagos!

I absolutely love Lagos and want to move there. The hostel totally helped to enhance my time spent in lagos, we met tons of cool people and became a big happy family. We were there oct of 2003. The night life was awesome, love the old tavern with george and robin, also beer bongs at three monkeys!!! Adam from CAsa rosa, what a sweetie and awesome food. Breakfast at the hostel was deadly, everyone would get together and talk about drunkin adventures from the night before. Careful not to wonder off along or you might get lost... I met the hostel nazi as well, he was working at night. But there was also a sweetie working one night who helped me to my room after I passed out on the bathroom floor. That pretty much sums up lagos, if you like to party and have a good time it is the place for you and you will not be sorry. Go to lagos, I recommend it highly, I plan on moving there!!! The hostel played a big part in the good time i had there, the courtyard and common area were great, we watched simpsons in english and forrest gump. The showers were good too, everything great, esp checkout at noon and all the suckers end up staying another day, we stayed 9 instead of the 3 we intended!!! Go to lagos!!!!

Lagos is a wonderful town with great beaches and a better nightlife. I'm not a partier but the ppl there practically force you to go out. The place had a nice courtyard and clean bathrooms and even a kitchen. It is definitely a good place to meet people. If you want better accommodations, try the 'quartos ladies' who hound the buses when they arrive. we got an AMAZING deal. For 25 euros, we had our own HUGE clean double room with a balcony and since there was nobody in the other room, we had the whole apartment to ourselves, just a short walk to the beaches. Depending what you want, there's always something in Lagos

The nazi security guard has been fired. That is, he's now doing handy work around the hostel in stead and is not allowed to bug the guests. Apparently there were too many complaints. In stead the hostel has got some young easy going night guards!

We arrived after 12pm at this hostel and ended up being taken to the "hotel" opposite. This place consists of a bunch of overcrowded rooms where the owner´s only concern is fitting in as many people as possible. We were then given the options of sleeping in a small room that had five beds shoved into it wherever they could fit or we were offered a double room for 42. We ended up walking around the corner and getting our own room with bathroom and terrace for 40. I can see that this would be a great place to stay if all you wanted to do was get trashed but if you want any peace at all, go elsewhere.

Lagos is a fantastic place. Probably the best backpacker hang out in Europe. The beaches are great; there's almost always blue sky in the summer, and the night life, oh, the night life....it's absolutely brilliant. Most people start out down at The Old Tavern for their double up between 10 pm and midnight, and then move on to other favourites like Whytes and The Red Eye finishing up at The Calypso or The Grand.

The Pousada is a really nice hostel. Cosy court yard and a breakie and very helpful staff, well except for one person and this is really why it doesn't get five stars. The hostel has a Nazi security guard. You'll spot him easily in the afternoon; he looks like a bald attack hamster with a moustache.

After one o'clock the Pousada locks the door and you can only get in by having him let you in. So you are at his mercy which is a situation he thoroughly enjoys. The problems with this man have been numerous during the years. He really doesn't like anyone, but he's especially nasty to girls. He has on several occasions slapped girls across the face if he thought they were too rowdy or drunk when they came home. However, this he will only rarely do. Perhaps a couple of times during the summer. And with the many Canadian and American girls who won't take any crap this has resulted in a few police reports. I havent heard of anyone slapping him back, but then again he is rather intimidating.

Anyway, mostly he'll just be rude to people. This goes for both girls and guys. Sometimes refusing to open the doors for like 15 minutes, just staring at the guest sitting outside pleading to get in at four o'clock in the morning. Its like some kind of power trip. Its very weird, but so is he. Of course the rest of the staff is very much aware of this problem, since they have to listen to all the complaints. But apparently the Nazi can't be fired, because he's hired by the national hostel organisation.

Anyway, there's a great way out of this. Across from the youth hostel is kind of an appendix to the Pousada known as "Olindas", which is also the name of the woman who runs it. It's basically a few flats with a common kitchen and rather large inner balcony. Usually about 20-25 backpackers stay there and it's like its own little community. This is where the Pousada sends people who arrive after mid day when the Pousada itself is normally full. So you might end up there anyway, which will be your luck.

It's a great place with some advantages to the Pousada. It has nice rather big single beds as opposed to bunks in the Pousada. And the rooms are a lot bigger. However, theres no breakfast. But a lot of people tend to have a hard time getting up for that as it is ;)

More importantly, you get your OWN key, so you can get in without any hassles. This is something you will definitely appreciate during your stay, which is likely to be a lot longer than you planned :) So I definitely recommend you stay at Olindas, especially if you are a girl.

The easiest way to get there is just to go to the reception at the Pousada and ask them to call Olinda's and she'll come over and get you. If she's at work you can store your backpacks at the Pousada and hang out at the beach till she gets back.

While staying at Olinda's you are of course free to go and hang out at the Pousada as well.

In any case if you're going to Europe, don't miss out on Lagos. This is likely to be the place where you'll have the most fun on your trip. Ask anyone you know who's been to Europe and stayed in Lagos.

I had four really nice days in this hostel two weeks ago. Five stars for the very friendly and helpful staff. And five stars for the humangous breakfast which is included in the price.

Bathrooms and toilets were very clean, but the showers in the girl's bathroom had no curtains, so that the clothes got a little bit wet.

Lagos is great location, too. Nice walks along the cliffs. Take a bustrip to Sagres and walk to the lighthous: great views of the coastline.

I visited this hostel in October 2002 and found it to be very good. Evening staff were very helpful with information on anything. Great facilities too. The Old Tavern at the corner is great as well ... very friendly staff ... Jamie, Elvis, El and Hugo.

I am in my 50's but it is great for any age. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I wasn't in the best of rooms as they were right on the street, therefore, noisy traffic, etc. I would definitely return to this hostel ... but would request a courtyard room.

ENJOY!!
