The location, Bairo Alto is the place to be if you like the night life which here is translated in noisy streets full of drunk and stoned tourists and locals.
Very-very difficult to reach it since it is up-up-up on the hills of Lisbon. So, it is not advisable to take the metro becuse from the station you will have so much to climb. Better take the tram. From the tram station it is very easily to get to the hostel.
Stayed there for 3 nights
The hostel is in a renovated old masion and so far the only building in that bairo that does not have grafitti on it. However the inside.....the doors block and have no door knobs and you risk to be blocked overnight without the possibility of going to the bath.
The worst of the worst: lady Filomena. I did not yet understand her position there. But she was a one lady show from cleaning to administrating the hostel. She is a very-very rude person, not a good accountant, never smiles. She says she does not have available beds although there where plenty. No matter with whom you talk about making a reservation if she does not know about it it's like you do not have a reservation. She moves people around the rooms on the motive that she does not have enough available beds...
Breakfast...you are not allowed more than 2 pieces of bread per person
and the rules stated on the walls are in a very unpolite language. The rest of the hostel staff does not speak any English. Filomena claims to speak but when going in more elaborate conversation you loose her. So be prepared for the sign language or to learn basic portuguese. What is even more annoying is that she was talking with another employee about us thinking that we do not understand her....
The best thing is that they have an agreement with a taxi driver that can take you to the airport for the correct sum of money-7 euros, if i remember. DO NOT however take any cab from the airport for more than that sum. There is a bus that takes you from the airport to pretty much all Lisbon center and the ticket is 5 euro. Take it up to Restauradores and from the tram is definetly-and tried-the easiest way to reach Bairo Alto and Lemon Hostel. If you do not have any lugguage, climbing is easier and you can take any way.
Great-great city, worth travelling and staying but at Lemon Hostel only if you like to tame beasts and have fun doing conflict management while on vacation.
