Not for a single woman travelling alone, June 14, 2005

Although I was not accepting a room in a palace, I was hoping that I could sleep in relative peace and security. I was sadly mistaken. At around 10PM one night, a group of three men barged into my room, yelling in Russian. They claimed to be the police and wanted to see if I had registered. No hotel representative accompanied them and I have to admit that I felt quite vulnerable. I was alone in the room and half-asleep. A camera and a guard apparently monitor the place, so I must assume that someone let these men in. This experience along with other inconveniences (limited shower access, locations of shower on ground floor, absence of sheets and mosquito netting) made my stay in the hostel unpleasant.

I stayed here for a few nights the week after the 300-year festivities, so it was crowded and the reception was always hectic. Seems a good place to meet fellow-travellers. Breakfast is always the same: an egg, cereal, tea or coffee (the nescafe-stuff) and old bread. Don't be late for breakfast and don't bring any towels or bags inside the breakfastroom, or you'll be yelled at in Russian :)

I rate them 3 stars anyways, because they helped me out with the Russian visa.

Good location but quite a few downsides, September 25, 2003

The hostel is close to Nevsky Prospekt, the main street of St Petersburg, and a Metro Station. The dorm rooms are big and not crowded at all. Every area of the hostel (floors, common room,...) is locked and you can only enter if you have the code for the keypad (the codes are given to you when you check-in).

The common room is small but okay and is even equiped with a TV and satellite receiver (> 500 channels). The staff is really helpful and had an answer to all of our questions (except one: they couldn't give us directions to the D-2 submarine, but we managed to find it ourselves). They also help you with everything you might need to get your russian visa.

Now the downsides: You can only take a shower at certain times (about 2 hours in the morning and 2 in the evening). And they have a strict curfew. As we arrived too early in the morning, we had to wait outside for an hour (okay, it was our mistake). The kitchen is tiny and useless.

After all I'd still recommend it.
