When you get to the hostel, you wonder how on earth they fit fourteen beds, a well equipped kitchen and a lounge in a place of its size. It may not have some of the creature comforts of other hostels: the only hot water comes from a plug-in boiler, there is no shower and you need to brave the midges to use the loos and washrooms - but don't let that put you off. The volunteer warden at the time of my visit was most obliging in arranging a shower at Braemar hostel. And Inverey's major attraction is its stunning location. A minute's walk through the wood at the back of the hostel brings you to wild-flower meadows and the River Dee. Bring a good book, sit by the river and you'll never want a foreign holiday again!

A very small and simple hostel without showers and hot water. This lack of facilities is more than made up for by the friendly and cosy atmosphere and the wonderful location by the River Dee and up in the Cairngorms. Hosteling at its best!
