Perfect situation on the harbour, great for pubs, shops and the chippy van. They need to get some new bunk beds though !

I fully agree with Northern Girl! This hostel is a nice base to explore Mull. Good self-catering facilities, supermarket nearby, ... perfect for budget-backpackers!

Tobermory youth hostel is on Main street - a very pretty street of brightly painted houses along the harbour front., consisting of various shops, restaurants, the pier, hotels and guest houses etc. with the ferry terminal at the other end. The building is painted pink (okay, not everything is perfect).

I was in a 6 bedded female dorm on the second floor, which provided a lovely view over the harbour. The room was large with plenty of space. There is a comfortable TV lounge with lots of magazines, newspapers, tourist info etc. The kitchen is well equipped and was uncrowded. The dining room was comfortable and relaxing. There is a laundry and drying room. If it ever stops raining long enough, there is an outdoor seating area. No internet access. I found the hostel to be very clean. When I was there in September 2003 it was quiet. On my second night I had the whole dorm room to myself.

The hostel turned out to be good for cyclists. There is a bike store, and the hostel rents out bikes (I think it was something like 10 pounds a day). The receptionist was very helpful in suggesting local walks in the area.

For self caterers, the co-op a few houses along has a wide selection of things that are quite cheap. For a treat, the Island Bakery (next to the co-op) has a huge range of locally produced cheeses that I didn't see for sale elsewhere - they were sold loose weight so you can buy a very small portion - and other goodies, like home made rolls, salads, Italian foods etc. Mull musuem is small but excellent and well worth a visit, alos very close to the hostel.

If your coming from Oban and don't have public transport, buses go from Criaignure ferry terminal to Tobermory.

Check out is by 11am. Check in is from 5pm. The hostel closes at 11.45pm.
