I read the review from this website and found it extremely useful. It was my first time in Edinburgh and the staff named Catherine is superbly helpful and friendly and even chat with as we go along. The rates are very reasonable, hassle-free check-in and check out system. (so simple that you wouldn't realized you've done it)The showers a little bit worn out.... and you'll need to get use of the kitchen. There is now a locker facility for you to lock away your stuffs. What can I say? great people, great location (super near to the Waverly Station, do not take the staircase, just walk up to the cockburn street and turn left) reasonable rates..... it's cool.It would have been perfect if they can just provide free wifi... i do not mind paying extra...... the global gossip is not pay as you go..... you'll be using it even when you're not login....... so to me it is a rip off.

I thought I was staying at Brodies 1 (based on Bugeurope reviews) - but it turns out I was at Brodies 2 and it was not good at all. This was our first experience of hostelling in Europe and we thought this was what it was going ot be like however this was the worst hostel we stayed at.While I waited 10 mins for the shower to go hot, I find out that the hot water isn't on but they will turn it on and it will take half an hour to heat up.The toilet was blocked (female), tap not working & hand dry broken. Bed was dodgy.Maybe try Brodies 1?

Although centrally located I found Brodie's 2 was by far the worst place that I stayed while in Europe. The door is unlocked during the day and although we were told it would be locked at night, the two nights we stayed it wasnt locked! niether were the doors to the door rooms! which would be ok if they offered luggage storage but they dont, they only offer these tiny little lockers for storing valuables and they look as though they would all pop open with the slightest use of force. The sheets on the bed were filthy with stains, my mattress had springs sticking so far out of it that i could see metal poking through when i lifted up the sheets. The noise from the street was horrible but nothing compared to the water pipes upstairs that made this horrible noise and rattled the walls about every 30-60 seconds, so loud that it keeps you up all night. The showers were good but the toilet (just one in the entire building unless i couldnt find the others) was small and filthy. The rooms were expensive and incredibly disappointing.

it's pretty basic accommodation, not up to US college standards I was told, and yeah the bathrooms are co-ed, but the team at the desk are great guys and the other people there are mostly genuine travellers, so plenty of opportunity to see the Castle, the clubs etc with mates. So if you're going to Edinburgh for the experience not the elegance, try this place!

Stayed here in June 2005. For:1) Centrally located, although the royal mile is a bunch of bullshit.2) Comfy beds3) Free internet, after paying ridiculous prices at all the SYHAs(a quid for 20 mins)Against: 1) Dirty toilets2) Crowded roomsSurely there are better places to stay in Edinburgh.

DON'T stay at Brodies2. The noise generated by cars travelling over the cobble stones is par for the course - BUT if you get a room on the upper floor (and there's a 50% chance you will), then you will be subjected to the most horrendous noise generated CONSTANTLY throughout the night by a water pump in the roof cavity. The noise penetrates even the best earplugs and continues for 90 seconds with a 2 minute space of silence - believe me - I counted this throughout the night.Yes they have comfy beds and great showers, but the noise was unbelievable and I cannot believe they have the audascity to sell beds under such conditions. Apparently they cannot fix the problem - so don't stay there!!!!

i'm not sure why brodies 2 gets a rating as being scotland's only 4 star hostel, as it is nothing too above average. it's clean and there are hot showers. it's a pretty noisy place, as the walls are paper thin, so i didn't think my private room was a good value on the 1st night. the dorm room was nice though (despite the noise of course). decent common area, no tv, no smoking. the front door is not locked during the day and neither are the dorm rooms, so that is a concern. shower rooms are unisex. overall, it's ok but next time around i might check out another place.
