Castle Rock is a great hostel near the castle. Facilities include a cinema-style TV lounge, a lounge with a pool table and a ‘posh’ lounge with a piano and fireplace. There’s also a kitchen and a dining area with a big banquet table. It has big spacious dorms with high ceilings that range from four to 14 beds.

For being such a big place, the organization is really good. We dont usually choose hostels because they have a good atmosphere, as we mainly use them to cook and sleep. We like quiet hostels. This one achieves to have a very good atmosphere but this doesn't mean noise or disturbing others. The buiding is old but renovated and it is quite clean for being so big and so many people using things. You don't feel it hasn't been cleant for ages. The lounge room and posh room are one of the best I have ever seen in hostels. The location can't be better. The staff is nice and there is something in the hostel that makes you feel really good.
The hostel organizes tours around the city, and it is ideal if you are travelling on your own.

I liked the Castle Rock, although I did find all of the long-termers to be somewhat intimidating. The room I was in was one of the largest dorms, but didn't seem crowded in the least. The only real complaints I have were the beds (not the most comfortable) and the fire alarm going off at 5 in the morning, but unfortunately that happens sometimes (when some idiot smokes in the stairs). The staff was great, really friendly, and the location between the Royal Mile and the Grassmarket is great. If you're looking for a larger hostel with a great atmosphere, stay here! If you want something a little smaller, try the Royal Mile hostel (see review posted under that name).

This hostel was wonderful! The staff is so nice and helpful. They let you use the hostel and facilities up until 10 pm on the day you check out! The common rooms are huge with a pool table and lots of places to chill. There are always cool people around to meet and the dorm rooms have a great view and are big for hostels. The location is great being really close to all fringe festival activities and the royal mile. I had a great time here and would suggest it to anyone!

Although this is not the best hostel you can find in any absolute sense, which I resolutely believe can only be "The Circus" in Berlin, it is the better among the three hostels I have stayed at in Edinburgh. The other two being "Brodies 2" and "Edinburgh Eglinton SYHA". This place is charming in an unusual way and by the time we had to leave, we did not feel like it. The rooms are huge and uncluttered. Cleanliness is not the first priority here. The beds are not the best and can take some time getting used to. The views are great. The quiet reading room is nice. They even show a free movie every night. The kitchen is quite bad though, with no storage space even though there are about 7-8 refrigerators. I suspect that some people stay here on a long term basis, with the hostel having reduced rates for long term stay. And if you want to stay here for free you just have to show up at some specified timein the morning to help with the cleaning duties. I never tried this though. In one line, if I visited Edinburgh again and had to stay at a hostel,I would definitely stay here.

While this wasn't the best hostel I've stayed in, it was the best of the four in which I've stayed in Edinburgh. The room I was in was so big that it didn't seem like there were 16 people staying the room (usually I opt for smaller rooms but this time it worked out fine). The location is excellent and the common room is also great although it does get a little smokey at times. Unlike the previous reviewer, I found the staff to be very helpful and friendly so I guess it just depends who you get.

e place is clean, well located and cheap. Therefore the staff is indeed rude to anyone outside their little clique. I<ve stayed in waaaay better hostels, so I would definitely pick another one, Edinburgh<s full of them!

I love staying at the rock and do so every time I go to edinburgh. It's clean (amazingly so seeing as it can have 250 people in it at any time) and cozy and the staff are amazing. I love that people like the hostel enough to stay there long term. As sign of a good hostel is that people would rather live there then in a flat. Any noise related problemes i have had in the room have been quickly dealt with by the receptionist. I think we all need to keep in mind that it's a hostel not a hotel and at the end of the day it's a fantastic hostel.

This hostel is in a great location - literally a few steps from Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile. Beyond that, it has very few redeeiming qualities. I'm not sure who qualified the wooden frame nailed to the wall with a crappy foam pad on it as a bed. I've seen hobos and bums with nicer bedrolls in their shopping carts. We stayed in a ten bed room that basically stunk. Several of the other guys in the room had been living there for a year or more. Their stuff was everywhere, and it was a disaster. Not even a bit of cleanliness or organization anywhere. The funk from the dirty towels and clothes was pretty bad. The internet services were good enough - but then again, there was the drunk loser on the stairs cussing and slobering while trying to pick a fight with another guy. The bathrooms were big, but I'm not sure when they were last cleaned - go barefoot at your own risk. This hostel is a disgrace to the beautiful city of Edinburgh.

Location is great, the building is really nice, friendly staff, good common areas BUT not too clean, specially the toilets (the hostel was packed when i stayed there, so maybe i just caught the worst moment), uncomfortable bed in a too crowded room full of noisy ppl, didn´t see any locker or even any space to leave anything in that overcorwded room, the floor was literally half occupied by bags, backpacks, shoes and stuff.Maybe my opinion is biased by the fact that i couldn´t get to sleep more than 3 hours, but tho the atmosphere of the hostel and esp. the location are great, if i go to Edinburgh again i will stay somewhere else.
