Brilliant because: its clean, especially bathrooms, NO curfew, legandary jukebox & pool table & TV in social area (films shown @8pm), huge kitchen.Threshers Off-liscence near [WARNING!: Scottish alcohol legal-regulations suck, so no stores retail alcohol after 10pm- ....dont be caught out, like numerous other oblivious foreign suckers!]...and great staff.LOCATION: Just off main high st. (yeh, whats that name all about?!), hence huge choice of pubs near (600 in Edinburgh) + nightclubs. Train station 5 min walk. You'll meet loadsa great people from all over the world, mixtures of guests, some nocturnal- so there's always people willing to go out.Edinburgh night life is brilliant; festival time from mid-august to early september is recommended (apparently).People come here and never want to leave (seriously, you'll meet people who intended to leave ages ago).

I stayed here for just under a week in December, only because we were taking advantage of the free night deal. The long termers really had taken over the place, and seemed to think that if they had to get up at 7am to go to work then you should wake up with them. I understand dorms are never really quiet or private, but the people staying in my room knew no dorm room etiquette. It starts with you, people! Back to the hostel, the kitchen wasn't too bad, but again I think long termers had the monopoly on the fridge space. I unfortunately was in the same position as some other reviewers to be quite sure that my bed linen had not been changed - unless I'm sprouting long blonde hairs and am unaware of it! It is in a decent location, and the notice boards were helpful in looking for flats and work. It all just wasn't really the best experience to start off my stint in Edinburgh

I stayed here my first night in Edinburgh, I was in a 4 female room. My bed had probably already been slept in. ( Thank God for sleepsheets) The staff was friendly, the macpackers tour picks you up here at 8am. Bathroom left something to be desired, no lockers, front desk will hold valuables for you, sum up: Don't waste your time, go straight to |Castle Rock, it's 5 times better! ps, cockburn street, on your way up from wavery bridge is a bitch, very steep hill....

Although it is busier than the rest of the macbackpacker hostels I really enjoyed my stay at High Street, its centrally located with a really awesome staff and good facilities. It is a gamble with the rooms, the smaller ones are quieter and there are a lot of long termers. That being said, I stayed both in a small room and a large 16 person dorm and slept well both nights. There aren't lockers and with the big rooms not a ton a space to spread out with, but people are pretty respectful of your stuff. If your looking for a completely silent, restful night this place is a little nosier but not ridiculous. Internet is available but breakfast isn't included. High Street is clean, well priced, and there are plently of places to grab quick bites around. Plus its a really great place to meet people. I would definitly stay there again.

This hostel had a superb location BUT the room was filthy, dirty clothing thrown everywhere. Long-termers had taken over and staked out their space, and the washrooms weren't near clean. I stayed in 5 of the other MacBackpackers hostels and loved them, but the High Street Hostel was no where near the standards of most hostels I've stayed in.

Stayed in this hostel and found it very small with no space to put your luggage and the hot water never worked. The staff were nice and helpful and the hostel is in a good location which are the only good things about this hostel. I stayed twice - one week apart and was assigned the same room where the sheets on the bed weren't changed...

High St Hostel has a great location, being very close to the train station, Princess st, and being just off the Royal Mile. There is always someone on the front desk, and the staff are extremely friendly, so you are welcomed with a smile. The facilities in this hostel are also excellent, with a large kitchen and dining area. On every floor there are toilets and showers. I stayed in this hostel on two seprate occasions. On the first I was placed in a dorm with 16 beds. The light was left on until the last person came in and there was always noise. As a result sleep was limited and it did become fustrating. On the second occasion I stayed I was placed in a room with only 4 beds, for the same price, which was much better. It appears that where you are placed is just a matter of luck. You really can't beat the facilites or the location of this hostel, but be prepared for disrupted sleep!

Had the greatest time here.. spent about three weeks this summer. Yes, the boys rooms can get smelly and you will need earplugs, but it's well worth it, because the staff and guests are really cool.. there is a nice lounge downstairs which often ends up being a nice social gathering place. The location is ideal, and the entire place is scrubbed every morning. Absolutely the best showers around, and the kitchen facilities are ideal. How I miss it there.

This hostel definitely had the most "lived-in" environment of all the hostels I've been to, and it's really a matter of luck what kind of experience you have. It is a good place to meet people, and has good facilities. The girls room I stayed in was fine, with 6 beds, but my male travelling companions had a dorm of 10 guys, and there was no space for one of them to put anything and he had to put his stuff in my room across the hall. People had obviously been camped out there for the long term and staked out their space. The mens dorm was pretty noisy, the girls was generally okay except for noise from the hallway. The rooms were a bit dark, but clean and the showers were good. The dorm doors do not lock and two girls ran into my room on my second night, my guess was to get away from whatever was happening in their room (since all I saw were shoes and no packs.)It is a very friendly hostel, the dining area is pretty good, and they have a good kitchen where you can store food if you are staying for longer. Breakfast is not included; you have to pay for it and do your own dishes. The location is great - right on High St. and looks really cool from the outside as it is set in a really old fortress-looking type of building.

The High Street Hostel is located in a lovely urban setting close to the center of Edinburgh, not difficult to find and allows quick access to a number of Edinburgh's sights. The accomodations are more than adequite, the lounge and dining areas are comfortable, and the society I encountered was very enjoyable. Heck, I even won five pounds playing a trivia game...
