BUG Review
For those who are looking for more than just a place to sleep you’ll find a lively, outgoing crowd here. The bar and TV lounge are excellent places to meet fellow travellers and make the most of your time here. The rooms are spotless and cosy and the kitchen is well stocked if you’re cooking your dinner. However, if you can’t be bothered or have no food, no worries they’ll cater for every need, just give them a bit of warning.

Basic and cramped if full., February 16, 2009
Reviewer: lindsam from UK

Pros: Heaters don't cost extra. Let us arrive late at night (1am)
Cons: The staff were a little moody, and charged £10 to pay by card.

The staff seemed friendly enough over the phone and reduced our booking from 18 to 15 (only 10 of us were staying in the end). When we got there we only had access to 10 bed however, so things were a little cramped. Even though they reduced the booking in numbers they charged us £10 extra to pay by card rather than cheque which was a little weird. They had not told us about not being able to bring our own alcohol and the bar wasn't open. This was a slight disappointment.

The staff sat in the sofa area watching TV which was ok I suppose but they did market the area as a guest area.

We also managed to leave a pair of shoes in the bar/eating area on Saturday evening and even at 8.30am we could not find anyone that could open the bar, though I spoke to 3 different 'staff' members. This was more than a little annoying.

The drying room, despite being just a shed, sort of worked with damp climbing kit. We filled it and were the only people there.

The way we were treated at Farr Cottage was disgusting. The owners were extremely rude to us., January 3, 2009
Reviewer: gracemillar from Scotland

Pros: Leaving it.
Cons: Threw us out on new year with nowhere to go, they set off a fire alarm and said it was us.

The people who run this cottage are wierd. The young girl has an attitude problem she is english and she informed me she hates scotland and the people in it. The family hang about all the time and they are never happy. The drink available at the bar is very limited and the pictures on there website are very misleading. The girl and her boyfriend sat about all day and felt each other up. It was rather rude. I didnt enjoy my stay and wouldnt advise any fellow backpacker to stay here. There are a many much better hostels in Fort William I have stayed in.

The staff in this hostel are an absolute joke. As a group of 30 young adults, the staff were unwelcoming from the start and simply would not leave us alone even though we paid the money to rent the cottage. They moaned about everything and finally we were chucked out, simply because the fire alarm went off! And we werent even cooking at the time! They became violent by swearing, shouting and physically aggressive. We had a good time as a group of friends but the staff made us feel uncomfortable and at times scared, the whole hostel was freezing and the bathroom facillities were rubbish. Do not stay here.

i recently stayed at this hostel as part of a group and was sorely disappointed. the only lounge area was stuffy with smoke. they made the group a tasteless meal, which they charged 5 pounds for and in the evening, the staff did a quiz for us, during which the "physical challenges" included lap dances and pole dances...for the staff!! to make things worse, there was only enough hot water for 2 of the 15 of us to shower in:( this hostel is under new management; sounds as though it may have been a decent place prior to this.

Fantastic place with great staff who really know the whole history of Scotland and where to travel all over the Country. History one night, whisky tasting the next, and a quiz night too !! Ideal for all group types and single travellers
