BUG Review
This hostel is superbly situated overlooking the Sound of Sleat, and you can sometimes see whales from the hostel deck. It’s clean and bright, with a very good kitchen and large dining area, and a comfy lounge with no TV. There are two large single-sex dorms with the women upstairs and men in the basement, but both bathrooms in the basement. It’s ideal for walkers and cyclists and very sociable, but not for partying.

Armadale is difficult to reach without a car, but well worth the trip if you get down that far. This hostel is more of a chill-out hostel and is in an old yacht clubhouse or something like that. The kitchen/dining are upstairs with a balcony to look out over the water. There is a lounge on this floor as well. It was all larger (10-15 beds) dorms when I was there, single sex. There is no laundry onsite. There are great walks around the area - good place for relaxing, although SYHA, in their wisdom, choose to kick people out of the hostel during the middle of the day. This is okayif you're just in for the night and moving on but not so good if you want to hang around.

Still had the dodgy old-style SYHA beds (those brown metal bunks) when I was there (2004) but this may have improved. It's only open during Summer.

i liked this hostel in the end, it's really, really small as far as YHA hostels go so i would not arrive on the island without booking ahead, but the people are nice and the lounge and kitchen are really cosy at night (mainly for want of anything better to do when its dark in armadale). my word of warning is that the town itself is very small and the grocery store is shut from 1pm saturday afternoon and all of sunday so be sure to bring lots of food with you on a weekend trip. i am also glad the sun was shining when i stayed there beacuse i have no idea what there is to do there except walk around and admire the scenery and wildlife. i am not surprised this is the first review here as i guess most people head straight for kyleakin, but i had a really nice time down south and would recommend this hostel for people who like very quiet places and lots of walking - its a stunning location.
