BUG review
This is a homely and well-equipped hostel in a particularly charming location that’s rural but not remote. The rooms are small but not inhospitable and catering facilities are good with a fully equipped kitchen. There’s a relaxed atmosphere here and the manager lives nearby and can offer assistance if required.

Rousay is definitely worth more than the day-trip that most people take. The trip round the island is interesting (cyclists should go clockwise) and the various tombs/broch etc are well-preserved.
The hostel is about ten minutes walk from the ferry. There is a good space to camp and the house is as per the photo. It's on the edge of the farm and there are chickens running all over the place. There are serviceable bikes for hire - you can try the tandem - and by next summer there should be a sizeable wind turbine to inspect.
The only downside is that the Pier restaurant isn't much of a shop. The only food shop is some way round the island so you're either shopping with a bike or stocking up before you go over.
Anyway, two of us had a great time there.

I was there twice over 1996-1997, in Summer. The hostel is warm (Which is a factor even in the Scottish Summer) and compact with generous and good amenities. (it is now 2003, and I have a good feeling still- very memorable. ) If you like ancient monuments and hill walking it is a great base. Also the bird life is well worth looking keeping an eye out for. I also highly reccomend the pub along the road to the west. I have no hesitation to support this hostel, enjoy it. Rousay is a truly beautiful and stunning place.
