BUG review
The Melrose Youth Hostel is a big mansion just outside town. It has a big kitchen and dining room, a spacious common room and a separate TV lounge.

About BUG's hostel reviews
This hostel was visited by one of BUG's team of hostel inspectors who write independent reviews and assess a star rating based on an objective assessment criteria.

We show up unannounced at hostels to write honest and unbiased hostel reviews. Many of BUG's reviews now feature videos and photo slideshows. BUG never receives payment for listing any establishment and BUG's researchers never accept free accommodation in exchange for favourable reviews.

Nice location - walking distance to town centre which has good eating places and a late supermarket.

Lovely old building in own grounds.

Quite strict considering it welcomes families:

1)In bed and lights out by 11.45

2) No access between 10am - 3pm

3) Kitchen is closed at 10am on the dot so don't dare oversleep.

4) There is no tv.This is not a bad thing but there aren't any games for young children (just chess) and only a couple of broken toys, so take some activities.

5) No meals provided

6) Strange one this but NO Alcohol although I did see the odd bottle of wine floating about.

Okay for a stopover but I wouldn't plan a long weekend in this hostel.
