BUG review
This hostel is on the main street of the village, which is quiet except when the ferry arrives. It is best to reserve in advance, because the door is locked, there are no staff on site and they may be hard to reach. Once inside you find a nice clean and bright hostel with a kitchen/eating area, a comfortable common room with TV, and good dorms (a large female dorm and a large mixed one) but with plastic mattress covers.

In August 2007 this hostel was sadly neglected. Just OK for an overnight stop waiting for ferry.

Basic but close to the pier for early morning ferry runs!
9 June 2007

Pros: Proximity to ferry, pubs and shops.
Cons: Dorms are really large and needing a bit of maintenance.

I worked in Stornoway but my OH was on Skye so I spent quite a bit of time in this hostel, waiting for the ferry to Uig (Skye). The location is fine, although car parking is limited. It was rarely busy in Summer or Winter but there were usually enough people around to have a conversation.

Always clean and tidy, most people who make it out as far as Na h-eilean siar tend to be hardy travellers and will clean up after themselves! There were the odd maintenance issues, like lightbulbs, faulty heating and damp/water in the stairs but nothing major (unless you combined all 3, haha!)

The managers/owners do not stay on site and bookings and payment need to be made through the local Post Office. We had a bit of trouble in our last stay there (in November) as despite ringing for 2 days we could not get through to anyone. We turned up anyway, thinking we'd pay in the morning, but the fools staying in the hostel at the time (really irritating old guy I'd met there previously and another guy) would not let us in!!! We gave up knocking and arguing with them after a while and went to the pub (up craic up the village, not the stuffy place towards the pier) where fortunately I ran into a couple of mates who let us stay at their place.

Not the most exciting hostel in the world. There are only a couple of really large dorms (one for females and one mixed) but clean and tidy and close to everything (and I believe your only option in Tarbert!) if you have to stay!
