BUG Review
This rustic hostel comprises two small thatched cottages and also a camping area, in a stunning location on the beach of this small peaceful island. It has a combined kitchen/dining/common room with a wood stove, very sociable but a bit limited if crowded. Guests keep the hostel clean. The bathrooms have no hot water, so don’t plan on a shower here, but the dorms are spacious and heated and it’s an amazing place to stay for a couple of nights.
Price Dorm bed £9 (£8 HI/SYHA) Prices are in British pounds and are inclusive of all taxes.
I did not stay at this hostel, but went to take a look at it when I was in the area in November. I was staying at the Uist Outdoor centre on North Uist. The hostel is a basic hostel run by Gatliff trust open all year and comprises 2 buildings, old blackhouses. One blackhouse mainly houses the communal area, kitchen and some bedr. The other mainly has beds. In total sleeps around 14 peopleThe hostel looked clean and tidy, the kitchen facilities were limited to a few gas rings kettle and toaster.Location is outstanding, right on a beautiful beach, golden sands and with absolute peace and quiet. Idylic sums this palce up perfectly, even on a winters afternoon the palce lloked fabulous. In the summer I would imagine it would be amazing. The hostel is used a lot I believe by people cycling around North and South Uist up from Barra. The ferry terminal to Harris is about 2/3 miles away£10 per night what a bargain

Until I arrived here, I wouldn't have thought that places like Berneray could exist. Nowhere with beaches this perfect - clean, white, perfectly shaped - exists in such a deserted place. And the views of other islands, mountains and beaches are to die for. The hostel itself is well equipped; certainly more than the 1 star given on the bugeurope report. Crockery and cooking implements of all kinds; a large coal stove, and additional gas cooking. The shower does (now) provide hot water. The beds are a little narrow, but there are plenty of them spread across several rooms. One of the beaches starts at the door of the hostel. If there is just one island you have to go to in your life, come to Berneray. Forget Hawaii, forget Barbados, forget the Maldives; forget the Seychelles; done them all, and the scenery and atmosphere in Berneray is superior.
