A very good hostel with very good staff but one room I was in was a little claustrophobic., September 7, 2007
Reviewer: Chris Winstanley from Victoria BC Canada

Pros: Well organised;good staff; close to the bus/train station and centre.
Cons: Can be noisy when the nearby disco is throbbing.

I have stayed twice at this hostel and would recommend it. The staff is professional and the hostel well organized. A plus is the on-site restaurant which when I was there was open till late. There are lots of different areas for sitting and meeting others. The bar can be noisy but there are quiet areas on the upper floors. Small kitchen and free internet are also plusses. I'm an older traveller and it's not just a young people's place.

First impressions were of a clean, well run and managed hostel. We stayed in cell 119 which included a climb to our beds, which if they'd had a grip at the top of the stairs would have made life easier, but the art work on the wall and the little clay men in the floor made up for it. The bar, cafe area was lovely, but our favourite was the Asian area where you could chill out shoe-less on comfy sofas and puffs. The bathrooms were nice and clean, despite people's best attempts to flood the place - that's what a shower curatins for morons!! The Metelkova area behind is one of the classest places I've ever seen. Art work everywhere, including a replica David. Lots of gigs going on, cinema projections, etc. Was a bit annoying when the cinema projection went straight into our room, but was kinda cool as it illuminated the whole room in shadows. Bar in Metelkova was rough n ready, but everyone was friendly.

The Hostel is a old military prison and the decor is outstanding. The people that worked there were great, each floor had a kitchen, free internet, although slow. The beds were very nice clean sheets every morning. The hostel has a bar, resturant, hooka lounge and a meditation room. It is a little pricey for a hostel but WELL worth it in my opinion.

The biggest complaint is that it's more a cheap hotel rather than a hostel. There are no cooking facilities & outside food & drink is forbidden in the hostel. However, their prices are no higher than elsewhere. The restaurant also serves the local population. The place is well worth staying, but it lacks the hostel spirit.

This hostel's definitely original! We stayed in one of the cells, as a couple. Would have been nice to be told before we arrived that our cell wasn't completed (the only one) but we did recieve a discount. This was pretty good cus as the other reviewers have said, its a bit pricey compared to other Eastern European hostels.

But- you pay for novelty and it sure has that, along with a good bar, hookah pipes and a free tour of the other cells (all a lot more interesting than ours).

This hostel is really worth a visit!! Although this hostel is definitely on the expensive side, it is still cheap compared to other cities in Europe and is totally worth it. It has a great and reasonably priced cafe underneath and the aptmosphere is lively, really friendly and plays some fantastic music.

The hostel is amazingly decorated and was one of the highlights of my month long visit to Europe. OK, its a bit expensive but you'll never get a chance to stay somewhere like this again. This place is a tourist attraction in itself. If I ever go to Slovenia again i'll definitely visit.

This hostel is really cool. Staff are friendly, bar area is nice as well as the oriental cafe. Always playing brilliant music. Location is very good, 5 mins from train station, 10 from city centre and across the road theres a small supermarket and bank machine. Very clean rooms.

Only downsides is the rooms are very small. Stayed in a 5-bedded room and everything was a bit cramped. Also in comparison to prices of hotels in Ljubljana, price is a bit steep.

This hostel was a lot of fun and very interesting with a very nice staff. However, 14 beds to a small room is just too much(especially with the 2 bathrooms in the room) and I would try hard next time to get into a smaller room.

I had booked a room few days before saying I would arrive late in the night and I was given a place in the big, big dorm where 14 mattresses are practically laying on the bare floor (they probably care too much about my sore back...) and only two bathrooms force you to queue long in the noisy morning in the anthill. Basically these mattresses are next to each other, I was just lucky I had a pretty girl as my only neighbour (mine "bed" was in the corner) instead of a smelly drunkard, hehe. Note also that the emergency exit was under other beds, so you cannot talk about safety in that place...

The building served as a jail, but you can see very little of the original prison, which is a pity. The reconstruction was radical and rather well done. There is a little meditation room, which is nice, but tiny and you cannot sit there (probably you are supposed to stand all the time, who knows?), so basically you can guess there was a room too little to place any bed in and it was renamed in a fancy way for mere marketing reasons.

A few positive aspects: staff is professional, atmosphere is good, furniture is new, bars look fine and wide.

Breakfast is basic, but substantial.

Price is way too high. For few euros more you can find a single room in a hotel in Ljubljana.

Celica is a beautiful hostel - quite striking to look at. Everything is very clean and modern - the rooms, the bathrooms, the small kitchen. However, when one digs a little deeper, a lot of deficiencies begin to appear. While the bar has a great atmosphere, it's also really smoky (even in the non-smoking area which was sectioned off). I wasn't too pleased that it basically served as the common room as well. The kitchen's lack of supplies shocked me. While there were pots, pans, and some utensils, there weren't any dishes, so that made for some interesting meals. And as mentioned in previous reviews, they really pack in the beds inside the dorms - 14 beds in a not-so-large room for 21 Euros a night is a bit much. Basically, the hostel was adequate and the location quite good, but I did expect better.
