It's like coming home.., August 19, 2007
Reviewer: Chub from Islington, London, Uk

Pros: This hostel is run more like a family home. It's a pleasure to be there.
Cons: It can feel isolated as it's up in the foothills of the mountains, but that is also its charm.

I loved this place. It met all of my needs. Mama and co are friendly and adorable. Their cooking is first class and they go out of their way to help each traveller with their needs.

Free breakfast is eggs and toast and jam, fruit and cereal and as much tea and coffee as you can drink. A perfect start for the day.

It is a beautiful bike ride into Lake Bled and a perfect base for some serious adventuring.

For the strong hearted, how about biking over to Lake Bohinj, once around, a quick visit to the waterfall, a trip up the spectacular cable car and then back home. A round trip of 90k or so. Superb and exhausting.. and the next day a slow walk around Bled and a soothing swim in the cool waters. Go canyoning or rafting, take a paraglide or climb a mountain or two..

And each evening, return home to Mama's excellent value for money goulash or stuffed peppers or chicken steaks with a carafe of decent Slovenian wine, (which I can reliably inform you, does not produce hangovers!) or a cool beer and exchange stories with fellow intercontintenal travellers.

I'll be back. This hostel takes easy first place out of all the hostels i've visited during my travels.

When travelling round europe by Interrail I had stayed in some less then good hostels around eastern europe, coming to this one was like a breath of fresh air! we were recommended it while we were in Croatia and decided to try it out seeing as it was only 15 euro a night including breakfast. We rand Damien when we reached the train station asking how to get to him, but he insistd on picking us up! the hostel was in a beautiful location and our balcony overloooked the julian alps! what a view! Dinner in the hostel was 6 euro for a four course beautiful home cooked by Mama meal! everyone sits together and chats about what they have done while on their travels the atmosphere is great. in the morning the mini bus comes and takes you to whatever you want to do today, rafting, canyonning, sunbathing etc! we went down to Lake Bled and swam in the beautiful warm water of the lake! incredible! Breakfast was fantastic, omelettes, toast, cereal, yoghurt, juice, everything! all included in the price. Damien was an eccentric old man with a fantastic charisma and everyone who stays will love him to bits! # What a great stay! Stephanie and Emily

We first stayed here in May 2004 and loved it so much that when we visited Slovenia again in September 2006 with our parents we even brought them to stay here. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Each couple had their own private room with ensuite for only 5euro extra. Food was great, with breakfast included in the price. There is apparently a couple of restaurants a few minutes walk away but we never tried them since mamma's home cooking was so good. The hostel even served beer. We hope to return to Slovenia again in January 2007 and we will definitely head for this hostel.

This hostel is a ten minute drive alone from the Lake Bled area. Yes, the do pick you up and deliver you into the city, but they would only offer to take you at 10am, and pick you up at 6pm. Therefore, if you wanted to have dinner at some of the better restaurants in town, you had to take a costly taxi ride all the way to the hostel (or even take an afternoon nap). Niko was remotely friendly, but always in too much of a hurry to fully accomodate. Really, the location was just too inconvenient and the perks not enough to stay this far out again. A good breakfast, however, and quite comfortable rooms.

This hostel is amazing! It may be a bit outside Bled, but you wouldn't think it. There are lifts to and from Bled all day, and in all sorts of vehicles too, even a red fire truck called Tallulah! Anyway, the nightlife in Bled is hardly buzzing. The food is great (dinners provided for 1400SIT, soup, salad and mmmm mains), and the bar there creates a great atmosphere (I recommend the blueberry schnapps). As for the activities...the boys running them are crazy!! So what are you waiting for? GO!

This place was great. I got picked up from Lesce-Bled station after coming by train from Ljubljana. On my arrival at the hostel I was greeted by Damien (the Dad) and given a drink and a lovely slab of cake before being shown to my 6 person female dorm which I had all to myself which as you can imagine was absolute bliss. There was only me and 8 guys staying there at the time, which was also not bad!! Then Damien drove me into Bled, and picked me up again a few hours later. I saw him doing this for the other guests too, and it's all free. When I left, I had to catch a really early train, but he still got up and took me to the station, and even cooked me a big fat pink slovenian sausage for my breakfast. Yum!

I recommend hiring bikes and doing the ride from the hostel into Bled village. The scenery is stunning. I didn't do any of the other activities as I wasn't there long enough but you can do white water rafting and the like. There is free internet access too.

Based on the review by Andrew (2001) I decided to stay there June 5-10 2003. This is a hostel run by a retired couple and their son. And you really feel a 'family atmosphere'. I intended to stay 3 days, but ended up staying for a week!

Let's start with location: you are in Selo which is a village a few km north of Bled. At first I wondered if this would be a problem. It most certainly is not. There are free rides to Bled daily. You may also get a ride to Jesenice. Also, you may rent a bike and take back roads to Bled. Plus the local train to Ljubljana stops about half a km from the hostel. You are also within easy access of Triglav National park.

I found Bled to be very busy and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere in Selo. Selo is tucked up against a small mountain and there are lots of places to hike and ride.

They have 2 6-person rooms and are clean, equipped with a bathroom each. It was very quiet at night during my stay.

Downstairs there is a small room for eating, watching TV and reading. You get home-cooked meals by Mama! And cheap!!! Plenty of Lasko and Union beer for about 1 Euro (as of last year). Breakfast is always more than just cereal and bread, don't be surprised to get eggs and homemade sausage.

When I was there, alot of their activities were not running. This is because a minimum number of people are needed. Niko coordinates with other places in Bled to get enough people to go rafting etc. I was not disappointed since there was enough to do, to keep me oocupied.

Slovenia was by far the highlight of my trip. I consider my time in the Bled area to be one of the best 7 day periods of my 35 day trip. While just slightly more expensive than Croatia, Slovenia is light years ahead of their neighbor to the south in almost every aspect.

If in the area plan to visit Bled and stay at this 'home away from home.'

I just got back to Munich from a holiday in Sloveina! What a great little country! As an Australian living in Europe can you belive how amazed I was to find a great Australian pub / restaurant in Jesenice (Northern Slovenia) the friendly people there arranged for some one to pick us up and take us to a Hostel.

The man who picked us up was Nicko and his lovley extablishment is to me not a hostel(no curfew). In fact all the other backpackers that I met there agree that it is with out doubt the best, cleanest and most sociable small backpackers in Eastern Europe. The free transfers and free tours and the free breakfast cooked by Mama added up to great value. It is as good as the best small backpackers that I have stayed in Australia. So it was a suprise to see that it was a VIP Backpackers. I dont know if I want to keep it to my self and my friends or tell everybody!
