hi,

just back from 7 nights in plaza pio xii, a little confusing to get to at first, good for sights, etc along the costa------

acomm gets 5***** !!!

food gets 2** - breakfast ok, don't know lunch, evening meal very poor, too dear at e5,50 - will tell you of chino restaurants later,

internet --none!

staff 3***, a little distant, a little impatient with monoglot idiots like me, do the goods tho'.

hostel a little away from the centro , walkable tho'.

buses and trains handy enough at 20/25 mins walk - go all over southern spain, local/regional with these two stations, close to each other., also easy connect to national spain destinations.

get to hostel: bus 19 to bus station, then bus 14 to hostel, bus 14 goes right thro' the plaza pio xii, recognize the plaza by the church on your left, which is tall ,sturdy, bell tower, yellow painted stone with 'proud' red 'linings'. hostel on right far corner, the plaza is small - you can't miss it from my description! taxis are very cheap anyways.

internet/phone shops are e1 for 30 mins, some go for 60 centimos per 30 mins - easy find 'em. call prices vary a lot , i think.

buses incredibly cheap - malaga to fuengirola e1,60, about 18 kms one way ?!!

malaga: beaches east of port are best, topless variety...

castle worth a look, if my spanish was any good i would say lots more - the tourist info kiosks and main info office are friendly and helpful, about the only folk who are in malaga!

sorry about that - the malaguenos seem very uninterested, no time for poor language dudes like tourists, but they also seem to have the cold big city vibe with each other too...sorry that's what i saw!

2 restaurantes chinos - hostel between two big avenues running parallel to each other, walk to south avenue of these two, go left, keep looking for restaurant with yellow front on your left, v. good cheap food.

other one i went to 3 times in the week, hostel/via de las flores/- virgen de las flores/avenida de carlos haya - go right here, stay on south side, look for restaurant with 'eastern' - painted frontage, excellent cheap food, more and more if you've been in the sun all day!

spanish culture: restaurants are likely to open 8pm!

also picasso garden (got there), picasso museum - i am not really keen on picasso (no,really!), didn't get there...

i really can't think of other sights in malaga city - one week is not enough to get your snout on the ground properly...

HOPE THIS HELPS?

GEORGE.

Very clean and comfortable hostel. I stayed in a room with 2 other girls, we had a private bathroom, and enough space to leave our bags/clothes. Breakfast was alright, not the best I've ever had, but hey... what can you expect for 13,75 euro per night, incl bf.

The place reminded me of a hospital, it looked and also smelled like one. The fact that there were many people in wheelchairs made that feeling even stronger.

It's located quite far from the city centre, it's so far that it's usually not indicated on maps. Therefore it's impossible to find, if you haven't been there before and most locals have never heard of it either. I reccommend to take a taxi to the hostel. They are cheap and it saves you a lot of time and annoyance. I was told to catch bus no. 14 at Av. de la Aurora, but I waited for ages and bus no. 14 didn't show up, and I wouldn't have known where to get off anyway.

All in all, it was alright but I'm not sure if I would stay there again. Cleanliness and facilities are ok, location and atmosphere are terrible. The money you save on accommodation will be spend on transportation. (I'm quite sporty, I usually walk but this was just TOO far, and it was too hot. Might be alright in spring/autumn though).

This hostel looks somewhat institutional, sometimes like a hospital, but it has been renovated not long time ago. The staff at the reception were friendly, but the person that took care of breakfast was definitly not happy with his job! The food was tasty, though. I stayed in a 2-person room with shower, toilet and 2 sinks en-suite, everything was extreme clean and they even sterilised the toilet everyday. The beds were somewhat uncomfortable, you could feel the iron inside it. This place has a bus stop nearby, the neighbourhood is somewhat noisy at night. The price is the best factor, only 11,35.

I stayed there in Feb-Mar 2002 for six nights and paid something like 15 euros per night for a bed in a triple room including breakfast (I'm above 26). Staff were friendly, one of them even knew how to say 'Cheers!' in my language. I always had different roommates, including a Belgian, a Danish, a German-Turkish, a French and an Italian guy. The hostel is within walking distance of the railway and coach termini. The only drawback was that the window would not close properly and some noise came in from a nearby avenue, but it was not terribly disturbing.

Freshly renovated (this is Fall 2002). Clean and not too institutional. No curfew. Relatively close to the old town, maybe a 15 minute walk.

Bus #14 goes Hostel-Town Center-Beach.

Not a bad thing at all.
