I stayed in Metropol for 2 nights, The location is quite good, in front of Gran Via Subway Station, and very near downtown most important attractions like Sol, Plaza Mayor, Banco de Espana, Parque del Retiro, etc. The staff (a nice guy called Henrique or more known as Kike)helped a lot with all the best tips! The breakfast was good: corn flakes, bread, cookies, muffins, coffee, milk, and tea! Unfortunatelly they dont have lockers, so you have to lock all your luggage when leaving your room. Each room has a bathroom. The shower is okay, the water is warm. They have 4 computers with free internet and you can use it for half an hour each time. If you wanna spend more time you have to ask the receptionist to let you, but if no one wanna use the computers you can have it for the time you need. The price of a bed was good comparing to other hostels in Europe (I paid 17 euros for a bed in a 3 bed mixed dormitory room). Metropol hostel atmosphere is a mix of a hostel and a hotel. I had a wonderful time there!

great location on the Gran Via, just don't mind the prostitutes that hang around outside. there is a security guard who hangs outside at nights. there's free breakfast and free internet until 10p. the lobby has a cool little bar to hang out in. the room itself can get stuffy but it's livable. there's an on-site laundry machine but a bit pricey (€4 to wash; €2 to dry). reception is really nice and helpful.

When we arrived in Madrid we really had no idea what to expect. We were plesantly surprised when we saw where our hostel was located. Even though it doesn't have ac- it was actually pretty nice. We got a four bedroom dorm with a key and the people downstairs were very helpful! we made our way around the city using thier help and directions. The breakfast sucked and it was pretty noisy at night but overall it was a pretty nice place to stay.

I agree with jaypandolfo and Tori. This place is like getting a room above Times Square (which would cost hundreds per night); its central to everything and safe, if you are alert about your immediate surroundings at all times when out on the streets. Use Gran Via rather than Sol tube exit to avoid prostitutes who by the way, totally ignored me. They line Montera, but are not assertive. You will note that there are always several police cars parked at the intersection of Montera & Gran Via. I stayed in 3 rooms over 10 days. The beds are steel frames with plenty of wooden slats supporting a firm mattress for a good nite's sleep. Having stayed in 2 streetside rooms, I would say the hostel might consider heavy-duty curtains to block out street light & noise. I dealt with street noise by using earplugs (called "tapons"), and covered my eyes with one of those black sweat bands to block out street light and, since I shared the room with others, the lightbulb above. The inner room was quiet, clean, & with solid beds. The staff was consistently pleasant and helpful, but I made it a point not to hassel them with impertenent requests. Breakfast consisted of coffee, tea, cold cereal, bread, and condiments, as much as you could eat. No one watching to see if you sneaked away with a some bread (which I didn't do). There's a refrigerator, in the dining area, where I was allowed to store my daily fare (bread, cold cuts, & Dannon Liquid Yogurt), which helped me reduce the cost of lunch. The toilets were cleaned daily. In all, it was a great place from which to sally forth to Avila, Segovia, El Escorial, and the terrific Madrid sights. And when I got homesick, there was a MacDonald's under by bedroom doing gangbuster business with the locals!

How have more people not discovered this hostel? First of all, it is the very definition of central. It is about 5 seconds from Gran Via, 2 minutes from Puerta de la Sol, 5 minutes from Plaza Mayor, and right across the street are the beginnings of Chueca and Malasana, two areas of crazy fun nightlife. Atocha station is an easy walk away, and for those who need to get to the bus station or to Chamartin station, there is a metro station literally right outside of the hostel. Some people will complain about the legions of prostitutes down Calle de la Montera, but they didn't bother me at all, or cause me to feel unsafe. The staff were very nice: always smiling, always ready to recommend something about the city. The dorms are small: mine had only four beds. It looks like the hostel used to be an apartment building. My room has a TV in it, with which me and my friend watched the OC in Spanish. And finally, the common room/bar downstairs was a lot of fun. I think this hostel is the official hostel of Busabout, so there are always a healthy supply of Aussies who want to party. Also, the sangria at the bar is a decent deal, and a good way to start a very long night out in Chueca and Malasana. Stay here. You won't regret it.

I have stayed here 3 times for a few days each time and would reccommmed it. The staff are very friendly, the rooms are pretty basic but large and the location is so central to evenrything. the street is a red light district but it is safe there if you are sensible and theres so many people around i never worried. There is 30 mins free interent access a day which is awesoem and the chaepest tapas and fun bars are 5 mins walk away. It makes seeing madrid in a couple of dyas very easy and fun!

The hostel is really good and the location is perfect. I think it was an old "pension" and they have recently refurbished it. They have singles, doubles and dorms of 6 and 4 people, I think all the rooms have the bathroom inside, TV, telephone and safety box.

There's free internet access. The breakfast is simple but OK.

No lockout, no curfew and very clean.

The staff,... well some are really nice, some aren't that nice but you find that everywhere.

I do recommend it.
