This clean hostel a nice TV lounge with small, but decent, couches and good security with lockers for each bed. The Berne Youth Hostel is in a quiet area near the river. It's a short walk to the town centre and a 15 minute walk to the station.

Hello Folks!In the last few years I often travelled to Switzerland. Like to whole canton Bern the so named city is very beautiful and the swiss capital is my favourite place for my visits in Switzerland. For a national capital it's a very small city with just 130.000 inhabitants.The best deal for accomodation in Bern is the youthhostel in Weihergasse (just down to the swiss parliament named Bundeshaus) due to the very high rates for hotels in Switzerland especially in Bern. It's a nice L-formed building with a nice foyer with seats, tabels and the reception (open 7.00 h -10.00 h and 17.00 h - 24.00 h). Everytime I was there a good looking, very nice young lady took care of the guests and was - like every other stuff too - very friendly and helpful. In the reception area you can get lots of flyers with informations about culture, restaurants, pubs, transport in Bern and surrounding towns and other youthhostels in Switzerland. The accomodation itself was standard HI-style. Normal accomadation is - diverted by sex - in 6-bed rooms with outdoor lavatory and bathroom on the same floor, but single and double-rooms are also available even for a higher rate. A good gimmick is getting an own key for a huge locker in front of your room to deposit your personal belongings without having doubts that someone could believe this is a "self-service store". In other youthhostels a locker is nothing unusual but you have to lock them by yourself using your own padlock, which in most times I forgot. :-)A very good advantage is the excellent hygenic situation. The toilets and bathrooms are very clean and so it's a pleasure to use them without having any doubts for vermings and mould. After checking in you get an electronic key (including the key for the locker). After pushing a small button on the door this electronic key opens your room door without using an "old style" key. Even with this key you have 24h-access to the youthhostel even when the reception is closed after midnight. The breakfast is a little bit disappointing. Coffee, tea or milk with white bread, butter, jam, packed cheese and - if I remember well - muesli. Exept for the muesli this is not swiss like. But however it's a good start in the morning without having anything in your stomach.The youthhostel is very easy to reach from the citycenter or main station. From main station you go through the underpass (Christoffel-Unterführung) to shopping mall Loeb on surface. From there go ahead to Schauplatzgasse, turn right to the Gurtengasse and cross the Bundesgasse (there is the cathedral like looking Bundeshaus). From the large square after crossing the Bundesgasse a stairway is heading downstairs to the Aare valley named Marzili. For non-sport-fanatics a funicular is on duty every day from 6.30 h to 21.00 h. The funicular has its own tariff, but national daypasses are valid. From the end of the stairway/funicular just turn left in the rear small street. This is already Weihergasse but go on for about 300 Meters and you've just reached the youthhostel. After closure of the funicular in the evening busline 30 runs as a circle-line from main station/city centre (Zytglogge) to Marzili with stop at Dalmazibrücke nearly at the front door of the youthhostel. The price for accomodation starts at CHF 30,-- up to CHF 48,-- (plus CHF 1,30 local tax) per night. For Switzerland a good deal!I'll rate this youthhostel with 4 stars. The only reason not rating with 5 stars is the disappointing breakfast, but every other facility is excellent. This was a lovely hostel, small personal and quiet rooms. Big communal area with ok breakfast, while its a nice area, i have to say its not the most memorable of hostels, and found it difficult to meet new people here, though there were always the few friendly irish men, who i used to have to give them a wake up call to get there train because reception wouldn't. Staff were ok, not particularly friendly. Bathrooms were ok, not very private, cheap laundry facilities though for Switzerland. Bern was beautiful, we were lucky enought to be there for the busking festival which was a great treat.

This hostel is clean, roomy, and has a summer camp feel to it. Even though it's technically institutional (HI) it only feels partially that. They sell beer and condoms at the desk. We didn't mind the trek to and from the station becuase it was nice weather and early on in our month long travel through europe. You also walk through a lovely park to get there and along the river. You really burn calories going to get from the hostel to the city center- all uphill. But in extreme heat or cold you should just stay in the city's center. We stayed here because we wanted to keep costs down by using our HI membership. There is coin operated internet, free breakfast, very clean bathrooms, picnic area and a small tv area. our biggest complaint was checking in- they said you could check in at five but they didn't show up til almost 6 and there was a long line at that point. If you are inclined to cook you might want to go somewhere with a kitchen because Bern's food is incredibly expensive and pretty gross. I'm giving it 4 stars because it is "recommended" by me but I'd give it 3.5 if that were an option.

Sound enough. Staff friendly, you can buy beer at reception, but like most HI hostels it is not really a kicking place. The night I stayed there was a South African childrens choir who gave a performance in the dining area, which was kinda weird, but different!

This place was nice, but expensive as hell. The reception dude spoke English well and the dorm rooms were rather nice. The showers, though push button, were rather hot too. A really relaxed place with lots of places to just take it easy in. Breakfast was a buffet, but not good enough that you wanted to take advantage of the buffet aspect. Also very clean as well. Kind of inconvenient to get to as you have to walk down a rather large ramp (or extended streets in a less direct route) and that's no fun going back up with a pack on your shoulders. In the end it's a decent place to stay, but for its price it should be.

The room is clean and spacious. There is a sink complete with mirror inside the room. Toilet is on the floor. There is also a big window inside the room whereby you can look out to a great view. Breakfast is included which is a usual fare of cornflakes with milk etc. Staffs are very understanding and helful too. They let us leave our luggages there in a store room even though we have already checked out the next morning but wanted to do some sight-seeing without the burden of luggages. When we came back to retrieve our luggages, they offered to call for a cab for us to get to the train station. It's quite a hassle to get to the hostel though 'cos there's limited public transport there. From what I've experienced, there's only a bus service in the evening which can get you there. Maybe 'cos it's winter, I am not sure. On the whole, it's a great place to stay with clean bedsheet, pillow and blanket provided.
