This was the last of the hostels i stayed at after backpacking for 2 months through europe in 12 countries. what can i say, this place was like a breath of fresh air (literally). easily in the top tier of the places i stayed with regard to upkeep. the room i was in was clean and spacious. i was in a 6 person room with huge lockers that were free. i had a small balcony and it is truly an amazing view of Eigar. this is a place where u can catch up on rest. i took one heck of a great nap while i was there. the place was not that crowded as it was early summer. the front desk people i encountered were all very friendly. they have one wash/dry machine. there is internet. plenty of chairs and tables outside to just sit and relax. this is not a party hostel during summertime. can't speak for what the vibe is like during winter which i'm sure is different. it is a strenuous walk upwards from the train station to get there but not that long. make sure u ask for directions at the TI. even with just a backpack you will be out of breath so u dont' wanna get lost. it'll give you a tiny taste on what it's like to hike in that area. **side note: if you find yourself complaining then do yourself a favor and skip hiking trails and stick with the gondola.** expect to see families here as well. i would stay here again for sure. if you want party head down to interlaken and stay at Balmer's.

OK, if you do come here all psyched up and expecting heaven you will likely find things that will disappoint you, because that's the way human minds work. However Grindelwald YH is the queen of hostels, and that's a fact. My only complaint is the size of the (otherwise excellent) dinner portions, but then I have a super-human appetite specially apres ski, and many people want (and need) to loose weight, so see it that way. If you must drive everywhere remember that youth hostels are primarily for young people on low income and these often cannot afford to run cars, and Grindelwald has already way too much traffic as it is, so make everybody a favour and leave you car at home, thanks, or else count yourself lucky that Grindelwald hasn't been declared car-free like its neighbours Wengen and Murren. Breakfast is actually a buffet including orange juice, yoghurt, muesli, cheese and "oriental"-flavoured green tea, so it's not so bad. The hostel consists of two buildings and the newer one has a nice big common room with a large-screen TV and sink & kettle to make tea with, but the last time I was there they had locked it up on the grounds that people were not using it, which is less-than-perfect reasoning if you ask me. Also the hostels location, although high above Grindelwald, is still only 1,100 meters, so not a great altitude for a skiing hostel and it can, and does, get incredibly hot during sunny days as early as March. It is in no way a convenient hostel, if you like hiking you're OK, but if you want skiing convenience you should go to the so-called "Mountain" hostel in Grindelwald-Grund, which is right next door to the bottom of the Männlichen Bahn and when there is heaps of snow you can ski back to it, but it is on the valley floor and the views don't compare.

Putting the previous reviews and my experience in perspective, I would say this is a fabulous youth hostel for hiking and visiting with a large group.

It is a good 15 minute steep uphill walk from the village - ok with a backpack, but I can imagine a pain with ski gear. It is more remote, so nice to retire to in the evening if you've got your own large group for intertainment. It's a very family oriented hostel with toys and crafts and entertainment for small children. My family enjoyed the atmosphere. The poor college student who showed up by himself hoping to meet people just drank beers alone every night. But it is an absolutely beautiful building with incredible views!!!

After reading the reviews, I have to admit that I was very excited when I was finally able to book a night in this hostel. My girlfriend and I had been waiting long to go and see the famous Eiger mountain and ski on the mythic slopes of this moutain, admire the fabulous sight. Not only that, but the reviews on this youth hostel were also contributing to our excitment. For the ski, the sight, the weather, the fun everything was there... As for the hostel.... I was disapointed to be frank: we drove to grindelwald for convenience reason and the hostel says it has a parking. It's true, there is a parking for ~10 cars and if there are more you are not so kindly asked to move away and go to a not so free parking (no need to say that if you dare not paying, the person who asked you to move will probably call a not so nice policeman to make sure you get a fine). If you intend to go there to ski, there are 2 buses an hour that take you to the station (20 mns by foot) and then you take another bus (1 per hour) that takes you to one of the 2 possible ski resorts (5 mns or 35 mns walk). The best one is the furthest one.

We had diner at the hotel: cheap and not good. One shot filling of the plate, no extra, you can buy wine or beer at regular restaurant prices. Diner between 18h30 and 19h30. Do not come after 18h45 otherwise the kitchen is almost closed!

We were at the hostel during week end. then we ate between 30 to 40 kids (between 2 and 12) shouting and yelling at p***ing us off. No calm but it's a YOUTh hostel isn't it.

The room we had (no place left in dorms) was quiet and had a nice view but it is not worth coming from New Zealand, neither from Nice do I think now.

The lock system of the room door is very modern key card. There is a ski room were you can leave your stuff. The breakfast is a simple coffee cup (I did not dare taking more as I had trouble the evening before) with corn flakes, cheese and break. ok, not great.

I believe the other comments so I would say:

- do not come here on week ends or holidays in winter time (because of kids)

- avoid having a car

- look at the menu before getting the very cheap menu

- if you want to ski, go to mountain hostel which is ideally located and may be less family like

People we met there were very nice though

This was the best hostel that we stayed at throughout our 2 month trip through europe. My only regret is that we only stayed there for two nights. I will definately go back one day. We met really nice people, the staff were welcoming and friendly, breakfast was great - wide selection. Dinners were also real good. The views were amazing, we sat outside on the balcony it was like you could touch mt eiger. I totally agree with the previous review, I cannot recommend this hostel enough.

This is definitely the best hostel I've ever been. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was spacious and clean with an amazing view of the mountains before you, showers were excellent (clean and great water temperature) and the hostel got everything that you need which I really think this hostel is more like a hotel!

I guess the only thing you might complain about is you gotta walk for like 15-min uphill to find the hostel but still worths it heaps since you just couldn't get any hostel better than this one. I would recommend this hostel to anyone who is planning to have the most pleasant and comfortable time in Grindelwald or the Jungfrau region, and I will definitely stay at this hostel again when I go back to Swiss next time.
