I absolutely loved this hostel. It's a good change of scenery from your regular 'party' hostels.

From the main train station, you have to walk or take the trolley down the hill to reach the Mtn. Hostel. It's located in a really remote area; right by a steam, and local charming houses. You will feel very relaxed and peaceful there.

The hostel is very clean, with a game/lounge area, big rooms, and very clean bathrooms/showers. The reception /staff were super nice.

The hostel seems to get a lot of school groups, at least when I was there, there was a group. There wasn't a kitchen, well just a camping stove outside for which it was coin operated, so it's not too convinent to cook there, but the main town of Grindelwald is just a stone throws away with lots of authentic shops, stores, and restaurants (Fondue, mmmm).

I would definately recommend this place if you're wanting a nice calm place to relax in.

We stayed at Mountain Hostel 4-13 August 2003 to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. Three minute walk from the train station. Car parking on site.

The friendly staff keeps MH meticulously clean. Breakfasts include muesli, fresh and dried fruits, meat, fresh breads, coffee, tea, milk, juice, hot chocolate. The Lutschein rushes nearby so it sounds like you are sleeping by a waterfall. Showers and bathrooms are always very clean. Rooms and lockers are secure. Excellent venue for individuals or groups on hiking/climbing outings.

MH has a small refrigerator and cooking area for tenants. Evenings we gathered food from the grocery and ate on MH patio in full view of the Eiger's north face. Turn the other way and you see Grindelwald's chalets on the hillside.

Location is convenient for moutain sports. Staff is very familiar with the mountains, events, and area amenities. The owner, Godi Egger, is a Mountain Guide. Our time at MH was more than we could have imagined. A great intoduction to the Alps.

i stayed here at the very beginning of spring. The place was practically deserted, but I was pleased to have my own dorm room of four beds to myself. BIG BONUS: They have hot high pressure showers! It was the first time I felt properly clean after a shower! If anything, stay here for the showers!

We stayed at the Mountain Hostel and were pretty pleased. The only bad thing is, it's a long hike downhill from town and obviously painful uphill, and the rooms are a bit too expensive for the location. Just make sure to get up early for breakfast, or there will be nothing left! If you have the stamina to walk all the way down and up, check it out first.

i stayed here and was not impressed by this hostel. for the price of a room with sheets is 39 sf. for 45 why not stay at Lehmann's Herberge. it is located right off the main road in town near bars and the rooms are comfortable with your own shower. breakfast is also good. the mountain hostel really is not worth the walk and its only convienence is it is closer to top of europe than grindelwald. don't stay here. you will regret it.

My friend and I had intended to spend two nights, possibly three up the mountain at Mountain Hostel. We ended up staying there for nine. If you want a place to relax, read a book, spend hours upon hours hiking in some authentic Swiss scenery, this is the place. Grindelwald still looks like it did probably 100 years ago. It has a log cabin type feel to it and is a perfect place to chill out and live like a hippy, away from big crowds. Just be sure to bring your food, the closest store is a 45 minute hike up the mountain.
